Purchased for a book club reading,I was riveted by one man's journey from a self-absorbed climber to a selfless humanitarian. The prose is engaging and illuminates the settings, conflicts and triumphs of the human spirit against enormous obstacles. While the "mountain climber mystique" has paled for many of us, in light of the recent exposes of bad behavior, here is one person that chose to repay the generosity of the native people of Pakistan by giving them what they asked him for, education for their children, especially the girls. Greg's transparency allows us to realize how much he had to overcome, both personally and physically, in order to fulfill the promise he made to the village of Korphe. That he took this as a mission to other areas in the Karakoram Mountains, and beyond, is evidence of his desire to serve humanity. His is a model we need to expose to the rest of the world and follow in ourselves, in whatever ways we can.

This books reads like a noval but is a true and amazing story of the difference one man is making in an impoverished, remote area of Afghanistan. The story is proof that one person can make a difference. His work promotes peace and education in a troubled region more than anything any government is doing. Read the book and support Greg's work. Enjoy the fascinating details of life in the region, details you aren't likely to read anywhere else.

This book is a great eye opener if you want to learn more about the culture in the Middle East. Mortenson gives a fresh view because of his unique background and upbringing. If you are looking for something different, I suggest this book.

This book is an inspiration. The story is amazing! It is told with great detail, and even though the exact locations get confusing, it is still very easy to follow. Highly recommended! Also a great book for a book club or a study group.

Only about a few chapters into the book but is the most interesting thing I've read since college. You feel for Mortenson whom just wants keep his promise to build a school for the young children that have such a desire to learn but no one to teach them. I'm looking forward to reading the rest it. :)

UPDATE: 11/23/08

A few months ago I finished reading the book and it was one of the most inspiring things I have read. Any other person would have given up having faced all the challenges that Mortensen did, but he kept pushing. Nothing made him give up his dream to help educate children. After finishing the book, I listed it on Ebay and donated the sale to the Central Asia Institute.

If you're looking for books for your Book Club this is a must read - a book you will not want to put down. It's short and well written and very interesting.
Greg Mortenson, a mountaineer climbing in the Himalayan mountains in Pakistan, takes on a project to find donated funds for schools for girls in remote nearly inaccessible mountainous Pakistan where people live as they have for hundreds of years with no eduction or schools for girls. Interesting what a few penneys can do. A fabulous book for intermediate and high schools literature classes with much to talk about in terms of different cultures and much more. English Teachers - you can read this in a few days - it will hold your attention and fascinate you and you will want to recommend for your school Library and as a class reading assignment - a great base for discussion. oregonbev

I have read a lot of books--and this is one of best books I have ever read. This amazing book is about how a single american can positively impact children in Pakistan and Afghanistan through education. The stroy is truly inspiring and humbling. When the children are provided a balanced educated they are less likely accept fanatism. We should all be thankful to Greg Mortensen for his incredible work and courage, and inspired by him to help the children of these countries.

Truly inspirational. I couldn't put it down, but I don't know if I'd have the guts to do what this man has done. I admire his family for backing up his dream. But to face the danger and trials was amazing. Thank God for people like him.

This is such a great story. It is too bad that more Americans are not like Grey Mortenson. I think that anyone that has to deal with the middle-east should read this book. Any soldier being sent to Afganistan should be required to read this book!

You will not be disappointed in this well told story of perseverance, tolerance, and the power of one man to make a difference. It drags at the end, the first 3/4 is wonderful, hence 4 stars. Still a hardy recommendation.

Three Cups of Tea by D. Relin & Greg Mortenson

This book, most written by David Relin, is on the life of Greg Mortenson, a person who grew up in Africa and became a mounteneer. The book is written very well and is easy reading. There are a lot of details on third world cultures where Greg either lived or visited. I like the book and is the first book to read in a newly formed book club. I would recommend reading it, nice story line and good insight to various cultures.

One Man's Mission Leads to Better Education for S. Asia
Review created: 06/15/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I just finished Three Cups of Tea and felt inspired to write this review. Brief synopsis: Greg Mortenson, former climber of the world's highest peaks, becomes impassioned about helping the remote villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan build schools, educating both girls and boys in these Muslim countries. He is clueless at first on how to gain financial support but eventually learns. He builds first one school, then goes on to build others in a countries cannot get their resources martialled to support education.

The reason I rated this book "good" rather than "excellent" is because I personally found it longer than it needed to be. The first half truly had me spellbound, but as the ending dragged along, I got impatient. Still, despite this problem (and maybe it's just me. . . ) this nonfiction tale truly offers a number of inspiring lessons. A western man who is open to the native culture can be accepted in Pakistan and make a difference. Here's a stupid thing to say, but it is a theme of this book: Despite widespread perceptions that Pakistan is full of Islamic radicals bent on destroying the West, most are just people like you and I, wanting to do the best for their families and especially their children. Education for these people is something they cannot take for granted, and because of that they cherish it all the more than many in the West. Thank you Greg Mortenson! I will be supporting the Central Asia Institute in hopes that they can continue to expand educational opportunities for children in South Asia.
