The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (DVD, 2006, Copy Protected)

Set in the Texas/ Mexican border area, a texan develops a friendhip with an illegal Mexican immigrant, Melquiades Estrada. Estrada tells the Texan (Tommy Lee Jones) of his life and family in Mexico and makes him promise to bury him in Mexico in his home town if he should die.

Well, see the title, The Three Burials of Melaquiades Estrada. Estrada does die in a violent fashion. The Texan makes good on his promise but never imagined where the journey would lead him.

This movie is not for the young or faint of heart. It has some very disturbing scenes and the inner workings of the plot are twisted.

It is a movie that you have to pay attention to...but it is well worth the effort.

I bought this film first of all because I like Tommy Lee Jones.
The film is great. It is quite different than alot of mainstream Hollywood productions. The acting is very good and it describes real life.
What I loved about it is the way Tommy Lee Jones' character matters in his own hands and makes the bad guy really pay for what he has done and not just go to jail.

I first rented this DVD on a chance that it might be okay, not sure that my husband would like it though. We watched the DVD two times and returned it to the rental store. A week later my husband asked me to purchase the DVD because he really liked it. I thought the movie was excellent also. What I liked most about the movie is it was real accurate where it was actually filmed, was really where the story took place. I've been to Van Horn, Texas and the Sands Motel and Restaurant are exactly where they are in the movie. The second thing I really enjoyed was the scenery, I don't care for the climate in Texas, but watching the movie I sure wanted to be there. The movie had a lot of laughable and good feeling scenes, yet also had some touching moments. What I didn't care for was one particular raunchy scene, on how actor Barry Pepper, a US Border Patrolman, treats his wife. This particular scene however really helps with the portrayal of this border patrolman's personality. As my father-in-law said after watching it, "It was a little raunchy at the begining, but the rest of the movie definatley made up for it."

Great movie. Both comedy and drama. What is friendship and how far will it take you? Also a peek into issues on the Mexico/US border. Mostly in English with a few subtitles.

A great story about a friend who took care of a burial of an unfortunate dead of his friend who was killed by a stupid mistake of an hardheaded border patrol guard who lied to the authorities.

In light of recent disturbing plans of George W.- such as erecting a fence to keep out our southern neighbors- it would be a good idea to re-release it now. I know George W. Lives in the hill country of Texas but I know he has never tried walking in Texas heat to try to save his family from poverty.
It is common knowledge that the border environment itself is prohibitive in itself to travel as many people die traveling in the harsh desert border. The border patrol is at the border to try to keep illegal immigrants out, yet it has been known to eliminate illegal immigrants and has been caught in the act, so it does not surprise me to see Tommy Lee Jones make a movie concerning this subject. It was a good movie that was about friendship and honor, about prejudice and the differences in people and in their sameness also.

This is an excellent, thought provoking movie which brings to light the differences in cultures between Americans, who all too frequently take ourselves too seriously and our relative good fortune for granted, as opposed to the Mexican culture, where the people may be poverty struck but the way they treat each other as well as strangers is a stark contrast.
The movie is not for those who are faint of heart, there are sosme very disturbing scenes, and a lot of profanity. However, this movie has affected me in a way such that I keep wanting to go back and see how the characters are doing now- then I remember it's only a movie. I am sure it is pretty close to reality for many of the people in desparate situations that we can barely comprehend.
I thought the acting was good, especially Tommy Lee Jones. It was a pity the timing of the release of this movie was quite a bit in advance of George Bush's new border patrol plan- it would certainly been an appropriate time for a re-release maybe.

This movie, T.L. Jones' first shot at directing and starring in a film is absolutely brilliant. The acting is understated, the writing is top drawer and the directing is spot on. Don't miss this one.

The condition of the DVD arrived in excellent condition. The video "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" was very entertaining because we had been on a road trip and had dinner at a cafe in Van Horn, Texas where the movie was filmed. Aso, we had passed a lot of border checks and encountered many border patrol police. Not a first rate movie, but entertaining.

This is a great film. TLJ did an exceptional job on his directorial debut. I still must say it's not for everyone, but I don't really understand the people who don't love this movie. Not really a western, no more than No Country for Old Men is. But if you loved the feel and movement of No Country you should really enjoy this movie also.

Tommy Lee learning to be the Sheriff in this years blockbuster? Same type of character. I rated this good although I LOVED the movie because it is not for everyone. Things that Tommy deals with casually, you will be shocked by.

i wasn't sure what to expect about this film (and i thought i'd like it a little more than i did), but this film is still very good. its about an illegal alien who dies, and has a good friend who wants to do right by him, but is prevented by the powers that be because he is an illegal.

some of the film is rather shocking and completely unlike anything. its one of those films that you can't step away from without thinking about it, and may take 2 or 3 viewings to truly get and appreciate, but its worth the effort. there is a bit of a twist ending, in that it really makes you wonder, but overall, its a rather good flick.

I give it a "good" rating because its so different and the acting was done rather well, but it was a bit difficult to get through too (especially at the beginning, but stay focused and its alright).

Could have used a little more effort in casting, but overall is a good movie and one that I would enjoy seeing over and over again.

I like this movie because it depicts the ignorant behavior of certain races towards others. Even though there are established laws there is no need to be rigid. It shows how some people are caught up with the power and authority to abuse others. In this case we find that the poor or those in poverty suffer more than those who are not.

Very good and entertaining film that would be a good introduction to folks who are not at all familiar with immigration issues. Great lead-in for discussion.
