Photographer: Guido Harari. Arranger: Craig Doerge. David Crosby's first solo album since 1989's patchy OH YES I CAN is a considerable improvement. From the Byrds onward, Crosby has always done his best work in situations where he has at least one artistic foil. He gets them by the carload here. Among his co-conspirators are Phil Collins, Jimmy Webb, Graham Nash, Jackson Browne, Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro (who died while this album was being finished), Stephen Bishop, and most interestingly, San Francisco-based R&B songwriter and former new wave pop princess Bonnie Hayes. Crosby and Hayes perform her music-industry ballad "Coverage," from her brilliant 1982 debut GOOD CLEAN FUN. On that album, the song is sung in the voice of a struggling newcomer in a fringe market. In the post-grunge '90s, having Crosby sing the fatalistic lyrics as a leftover from a different era gives the song an unexpected new twist.
Editorial Reviews 3 1/2 Stars - Very Good - ...some of his most compelling work to date...haunted by a tender nostalgia and empowered by a knowingness that comes only to those who have lived a few years and learned a few lessons... Rolling Stone (09/16/1993)
