The play which this film was adapted from ran on Broadway from 1962-1963. Jason Robards, Barry Gordon and Gene Saks played the same roles on stage. Coe, who also directed and produced the show, put off completion of the film to allow Saks to recreate his role. William Daniels was also in the original cast on Broadway. Sandy Dennis originated the role of Sandra (played by Barbara Harris in the film) on the stage.
