Synopsis
Dr. Siri Paiboun, the elderly but wily national coroner of Laos as well as the latest incarnation of an ancient and powerful Hmong shaman, returns in this dryly humorous sequel to THE CORONER'S LUNCH. In the stiflingly hot month of March 1977, Siri's attention is occupied with any number of things, including various incursions from the spirit world, a bureaucrat's mysterious tumble from a window, the nearly incinerated bodies of two pilots from a downed helicopter, a series of brutal deaths attributed to an escaped bear, and an unexpected encounter with Laos's former king.

Industry Reviews
"[Q]uirky, exotic and winning....Paiboun's droll wit and Cotterill's engaging plot twists keeps things energetic....The elegant, elderly Paiboun seems an unlikely vehicle to carry a series...but he does so with charm and aplomb."
Publishers Weekly (06/06/2005)

"Siri's second is as entertaining as his first." (starred review)
Kirkus (06/15/2005)

"[K]eeps a perfect balance between the modern mysteries of forensic science and the ancient secrets of the spirit world."
New York Times Book Review - Marilyn Stasio (08/14/2005)

"...Cotterill overcomes the potential pitfalls in his rather unpredictable mystery by triumphantly braving the tightrope between quirky humor...and the surreal macabre. Oddly, moments of would-be silliness...emerge instead as tragically funny and magically sublime."
Entertainment Weekly - Channing Joseph (08/12/2005)

"...Siri [and his friends]...must use their considerable wits--and an occasional supernatural assist--to crack the cases. As they do so, readers will crack more than a few smiles."
Booklist - Frank Sennett (05/01/2005)
