Synopsis
Romantic fantasist Sharon Shinn follows up MYSTIC AND RIDER with a second visit to Gillengaria, a feudal realm on the brink of civil war, and a place where many fear the mystics, those rare individuals gifted with magical powers. Noblewoman and mystic Kirra Danalustrous is relieved when her father decides to name her younger sister Casserah the heir to their House, because Kirra's love of wandering would prevent her from being content to stay forever at Danan Hall. Casserah feels quite differently, however; so home-loving is she that she refuses to join the social season and establish the noble relationships essential to the stability of her future reign. So Kirra magically disguises herself as Casserah and goes in her sister's place, whereupon she becomes engaged in an effort to protect Gillengaria's heir, Princess Amalie, from the potentially treasonous unrest among both the great and petty noble Houses. In the process, her enforced closeness to the realm's regent, the already-married Romar Brendyn, leads to a perilous attraction that neither can deny.

"Lyrical and entertaining fantasy....Peopled by well-drawn characters that readers can really bond with, Shinn's tale of a land divided among those who wield magic and those who do not trust it abounds with subtle romance and high-spirited adventure."
