This movie is one of the very few out there that are about ACTUAL teen lives. Movies like Mean Girls, She's The Man, etc. are cute and fun for some but not realistic.

A lot of people say that Evan Rachel Wood was over dramatic, and usually those people are adults. Either they have forgotten what it was like when they were teenagers, or they never went through it and dont believe that anyone else has.
They are wrong. Teens cut, steal, are sexually active, and lie. Im not saying all do, but some.

washington1960grad said it's about, "Little girls growing up way too fast. Sex, drinking, drugs, stealing, body piercing....there was no clear "moral of the story". Just despair." Well that's how it is for some teens! Teens WANT to grow up fast. They want to fit in. They want to experiment. And yes, there was a moral to the story. It showed by the end of the movie that the stuff they were doing was completely not worth it in the long run, how living that type of life can ruin your future so quickly, and how you just end up hurting yourslf and the ones you love. washington1960grad, you should have gotten the DVD for your 13 year old granddaughter, because if she actually payed attention to the story then she may have learned something.

I went through just a few of the things Tracy had 3 years ago when I was 13. Thankfully I never went too far. I was just a 13 year old who wanted to know what it was like to be "that" girl. Yes, I was immature, but Im passed that. However, I know MANY MANY MANY girls in my high school who are like Evie... and I live in Irvine! Also, this movie was based partly on Nikki Reed's life. She portrayed her time as a thirteen year old on the screen, and did a wonderful job at it along with Evan Rachel Wood, and Holly Hunter. The silent moments that Wood brought on to the screen were heartbreaking, and TRUE acting.

This is definately NOT a Hollwood movie, just real teenage life (for some). I recomend this for both teens and adults. Parents should become aware of the signs when there is trouble in there teenager's life. The reason that Tracy kept falling deeper and deeper into darkness was because her mom wasn't really there to pull her back (throughout most of the movie).

I just really LOVED the honesty and bravery of this movie!!! It's one of my favorites.

5/5

Absolutely every mother's nightmare....and the problem is....this is all too true. Evan Rachel Wood portrays a new teenager, fighting with her mother, experimenting with drugs and sex. This film offers a glimpse of reality for our American youth. Disturbing but worth the watch.

this is a movie about the life of a thirteen yr old. its an amazing story, its strong and well done!!!!!!! its about a "good girl" who wants to be friends with the popular girl in school, she starts out by stealing to be accepted by the popular girls, and then it goes on, the drugs, the lying, cheating, more stealing, late nights, sneaking out, the list goes on. its so strong because this movie was very dramatic, and is so very true, this is based on real lives that 13yr olds live!!!!!! (not all 13 yr olds of course) i do not recommend it for your thirteen yr olds as part of the strength in this story is how these girls are doing this waaaaayyy too mature for themselves.

This movie was absolutely fantanstic. Not only based on a true story, but it REALLY depicts how more and more tweenies this day and age act once they are out of the house. It was so moving and emotional and good for everyone to see.
This movie is a MUST have to keep in one's collection. There is no other 'teenager' movie that can compare with this one.

I like the fact that it keeps my daughter quiet for two hours. They say I have to enter 100 characters so I'll just keep typing until I reach 100.

"Hit me. I'm serious; I can't feel anything, hit me!
Review created: 07/17/08

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm a parent of a young daughter and this has hit me pretty hard because it is associated in today's world. I understand this isn't exactly a true story but I do think that is could easily be based on a true story because I'm almost sure that something very close to this has happened at one point or another. The acting in this movie was some of the best I've seen from this cast. Although it isn't what happens to everyone it is what happens to an unfortunate fraction.

There were a few points that just absolutely blew me away with the way they symbolized so much in one shot. I'm not taking any chances but I feel as though I need to place this anyway:
***************************Minor Spoiler Alert****************************

First: The shot where Evie and Tracy are in the park, Tracy gets high for the first time and they're all laying on the ground. The camera relentlessly spins in circles, is this not symbolic to her life just beginning to spin out of control. Second: During her "No Bra, No Panties..." attack Tracy steps into the shadows. When she stops her advance on her mother there is only a small patch of light on her face, the rest shrouded in shadows. There's still a small bit of light fighting against the darkness in her head, in her mind.

Finally: When Tracy rambles into the bathroom after her teacher sends her to the counselor she meets one of her friends. I don't know if her name was ever mentioned. That's beside the point: Tracy then applies a ridiculous amount of make-up to cover up her scars and her cuts. By this time she has begun to look as pale as the background of the page I'm typing this on. By this time the real Tracy is starting to break-through, screaming to be let out again. The make-up is just more layers for the real Tracy to fight through to get out. And the new Tracy is doing all she can to keep it down, but she can't. Director Catherine Hardwick made this movie work.
**************************************************************************
Anyways, after watching this there are some of the best performances, scenes and shots I've seen. I'm not a professional movie writer, I don't get invited to movie festivals in Montreal or New York and I don't get invited to mid-night showings with the actors present; but I do know what it was like to be a teenager and having seen stuff similar to this with my own 2 eyes. It's hard to believe that Nikki Reed had no experience before this film. She absolutely nailed the manipulative attitude of Evie, while also making the viewer like her. Holly Hunter's absolutely blew me away and I can't think of a better performance than Hunter's. You could actually see the terror and panic in her face as she watched her daughter slowly slip deeper and deeper into trouble. "Thirteen" packs a whole lot into an hour and a half, and, for that matter, into one girl. It's a movie, after all, but like I said it's very accurate and seems to stretch the fact that it's only a movie. Highly recommended.

  Typical victim of bad parents

Bad story line, bad acting, typical low life senerio that should be barred from any school system (blame parents and the government).
I bought it to deter my initial attraction to woman who claim to need help in life, then prove to be habitual offenders, who then go on to produce 'children from hell' after the break-up because they lied about being on the pill. Why the welfare system supports their drug habits is beyond me. I get drug tested for job interviews, why don't welfare recipients? I've seen starving kids dressed like 'scarecrow' from Oz while Vodka, Beer and Weed rule once the kid is off to school being babysat with my tax dollars.

I actually purchased it for a friend who is taking a Physcology course in school & they recommended this movie for their group in class to watch. I watched it when it first arrived & it was pretty intense. But at the same time it showed me how pier pressure can ruin a friendship & destroy loved ones.

  Love this Movie!
Review created: 09/08/09(updated 09/08/09)

I love this movie!! It seems so real. Nothing is down-played or edited. It seems at times to be more of a documentary than a fictional movie(From the way I understand, parts are true experiences of the writer of the movie). I wouldn't recommend showing this video to early teens. It does get quite graphic.

  Thirteen- Excellent, Realisitc, and Gripping
Review created: 04/21/09

With a director like Catherine Hartwicke and a co-writer like Nikki Reed, it isn't hard to believe that "Thirteen" was just as excellent as anticipated. Actress Nikki Reed, along with other co-stars, did the age of thirteen extreme justice, and showed what it is really like in today's world to be thirteen. I should know, I'm only sixteen myself and was experiencing, in a sense, similar situations just around when this movie was written. Reed and Hartwicke have really captured the pain, pressure, and pleasure of that first year of teenhood. Every movie should be written like this one. Excellently cast, directed, and acted. A must see. I give it an A++

This is a must see movie for anyone with children.
Review created: 10/03/08

I finally watched this movie. I was shocked at what was on it! As a parent I think we need to watch more movies like this. My daughter and I have a great relationship and could talk openly about the subjects in this film. It really hits home and scared me that she loved this movie. It's about troubled teens so I wanted to know why she liked it. It wasn't because of all the bad stuff they were doing but that she couldn't believe they got away with all of it for so long. She even said that she was glad I was so involved in her life and that I took the time to find out what she was up to and who she was hanging out with. (Wich is something the mother in this was trying to do, a little.) I understand that most parents work and have little time for children sometimes, especially when their teenagers. Also, that most teenagers don't want mom or dad in there business anyway! My daughter and I have always been close and so even I was surprised when she was so open to talking about this movie. Don't get me wrong, She's 15, tall, thin, blond and blue eyes! I know I have my hands ful with her! I really do have faith in her that she wants a good healthy life and she wants to discuss things with an adult if she is a little confused about something. Anyway, I know this was suppose to be about the movie. It really opened my eyes to the new teenagers out there. It made me want to be there for my daughter even more! This is a must see movie for anyone with children. You may not want any young children to watch. Watch it first and then deside for yourself!

  Good Item!
Review created: 08/15/08

Well I bought this DVD because I saw the movie on TV a few months back and really liked it. Also, because the price was right. Everything was good except for the fact that it didn't come with a case. It only came in a little sleeve. I am a big fan of movies and have a huge collection and I like them to look neat and nice and I really don't like having movies in sleeves because I can't show them off :P. Everything else about the item and seller was awesome!

  My view of Thirteen
Review created: 08/07/08
by:

I thought the story was a bit exagerated. I think this movie was a scenerio for a very small number of teens. I would recommend watching it if you think your teen is out of control. You may revaluate your thoughts. This movie was a great example of the need for parental guidence and what can happen with the lack of it.I did enjoy watching the movie. I only saw it because it was an assignment in my Human Growth and Developement class. After seeing this movie I was greatful to be a mom of boys!

Thirteen is about the transitioin from preteen to adult and the changes a person makes along the way. It's about discovering who your true friends are. There are good choices and bad choices and these girls just happen to make some bad choices along the way. They smoke, they cut, they drink, they have sex. At the end of the film you are supposed to believe that with everything that has happened with the girls, it's all looking up for one of them. You'll have to watch it to find out which one though! =D
