Album Notes
More than a decade after its self-titled sophomore outing, the pioneering British electronica ensemble Portishead finally resurfaced with 2008's THIRD, an album that both meets and defies expectations. Although the record features many of the group's aural signatures--most notably that exquisitely dark, cinematic mood and Beth Gibbons's heartbreaking vocals--it presents little in the way of vintage trip-hop, proving that sonic masterminds Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley aren't keen on repeating themselves. "Silence" kicks off the affair with tumbling percussion loops, while "Nylon Smile" drifts along on spare, slinky instrumentation, and "Machine Gun" moves to jarringly martial metrics that are battlefields away from any pop arena. Though THIRD is initially disorienting, repeated listens reveal a deeply engaging and fascinating album that stays true to the melancholy spirit of Portishead even as it wanders into unfamiliar territory.

An intriguingly new change of style ...

I have been a fan of Portishead ever since I heard their Roseland Live NYC album, so naturally, I had to buy Third at some point. I had heard the musical style was different on this album ... indeed, that is an accurate statement. Third is brilliant, and though perhaps moodier and less dreamy than their earlier efforts, this album is definitely worth hearing. Beth Gibbons' voice is as hauntingly beautiful as ever. My personal favorites from Third include : Hunter, The Rip, and Threads.

Its PORTISHEAD! It took a few listens to get used to the newer sound. Its more of the Drum and Base thing they're doing now, but its absolutely wonderful!!! I am so glad that I got it! I think I listened to it for 3 weeks straight! hahah

If you love Portishead, you'll adore this CD and appreciate they're maturation.

I like the first two albums of Portishead very much. I can't say I was happy they disbanded and appreciated Beth's solo pieces (although other Portishead's members were quite enthusiastic about her singing). I think there were 2 elements needed - interesting music & the voice. So when I heard about their recording plans (2 years ago maybe) I was sure I would have to listen to their new stuff. I felt it might be good. With a few months delay I found information about 'Third' and I checked it (only 30 seconds) at one site. I wasn't satisfied at all. But I decided to buy the CD and listen to it cerefully. I must say that this album is GREAT. Not so sad/dark, not so simple or commercial, but still dense and intriguing, interesting arrangements, melodies & rhythms (not all of them, because I don't like any sounds similar to hip-hop or so called the new-sound). It's easy to say "it's their best" refering to the last recorded album, but this one definitely is the best. The band's maturing. They still have a lot of good ideas. There's hope the next album will be also very good.

    Review created: 05/19/08

I am a fan of portishead's earlier albums and enjoy similiar music, this album however is somewhat urgent, I would not be suprised if their next album after this were something monumental, and look forward to it, in the time being, I am more than satisfied with this album, as it shows a shift to....what? we shall see
