  thing fall apart
Review created: 04/06/09

Things Fall Apart is a 1958 English-language novel by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe. It is a staple book in schools throughout Africa and widely read and studied in English-speaking countries around the world. It is seen as the archetypal modern African novel in English, and one of the first African novels written in English to receive global critical acclaim. The title of the novel comes from William Butler Yeats' poem "The Second Coming".[1]

The novel concerns the life of Okonkwo, a leader and local wrestling champion throughout the nine, fictional, villages of the Igbo ethnic group of Umuofia in Nigeria, his three wives, his children (mainly concerning his oldest son Nwoye and his favorite daughter Ezinma), and the influences of British colonialism and Christian missionaries on his traditional Igbo (archaically spelled "Ibo") community during an unspecified time in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.

Things Fall Apart was followed by a sequel, No Longer at Ease (1960), originally written as the second part of a larger work together with Things Fall Apart, and Arrow of God (1964), on a similar subject. Achebe states that his two later novels, A Man of the People (1966) and Anthills of the Savannah (1987), while not featuring Okonkwo's descendants and set in completely fictional African countries, are spiritual successors to the previous novels in chronicling African history.

  Pointless, short, and slightly entertaining.
Review created: 12/03/08

I bought this book for an English 1A class. It was definitely a fast read, only about 200 pages. The hard thing is getting through it actually paying attention. The main character, Okonkwo basically looses his dignity and family name after bringing shame to his village during peace week, in which he beats his wife. Over all an ok book, wouldn't pick it out for myself. More for those who like historical and tribal books.

  Great book buy

My daughter needed this book for a high school AP english class. She wanted to be able to write in the margins. I wasn't willing to pay full price at the bookstore for her to mark it up and then probably throw it away.
The book came quickly in a non-descript package and was in excellent condition. The margins have been written in and I believe the book is still on the floor of my daughter's bedroom. ;)

Two used books that are in very good condition. Exactly what I was looking for. The price was very low. There were some papers in the books, think of putting them out next time before you send it... but apart from this the books were really well-kept

I was about to notify Ebay when I got the book in the mail, sill with no contact from the seller. I would not buy from this seller again!

This is a wonderful book depicting African tribe's culture and traditions and effects of the early English colonization through the life of one of its members. It is a simple, straightforward and honest, but multi-dimensional work. Powerful!
