First, let me say that I LOVE this movie! I saw That Thing You Do the day it opened in theaters and thought it was great. I considered it a home run for Tom Hanks as a first time writer and director. He had said he wanted people to leave the show feeling like they'd had a nice breath of fresh air from Hollywood. And, that's EXACTLY how I felt about it.

There were a few plot questions I had, though. For example, did Mr. White INTENTIONALLY orchestrate the breakup of the Wonders (the band formerly known as the One-ders)? And, if so, why? What about the Jimmy and Faye relationship? Did he break them up on purpose, too? (That "Careful Girls, He's Engaged!" comment didn't appear on the Hollywood Television Showcase by itself.) Maybe he saw the potential for a much better romance between Faye and Guy Patterson.

So, when I found out there would be an extended cut of this wonderful movie released on DVD, I really looked forward to finding out the answers to these and other questions.

I WAS DISAPPOINTED.

Instead of answering the questions, the extended version takes the opportunity to undermine much of what I love about the story. There are suggestions of sex throughout... Guy making out with Tina at his apartment (in the original, Tina WAS an almost Stepford-esque, social climbing, dumb blond - but she wasn't a slut and we could assume that Guy was too much of a gentleman to take that kind of advantage of her even if she had been), T.B. Player actually taking one of the Chantrellines into his hotel bed (in the original, we see only good clean fun between them, eating cotton candy and enjoying the rides on the county fair midway - sexualizing this character only cheapens him) and there is even a scene in which the suggestion is made that Mr. White may be gay (a tuxedo clad Hanks is seen getting into a flashy red convertible on his way to what appears to be a date with Howie Long - but not before Howie gives Guy Patterson a long, lustful look of his own).

There are a few nice additions... extended scenes with Guy and Faye and a few with Guy and his musical idol, Del Paxton. But, overall, I thought the story was NOT well served by the additional material.

Thankfully, the producers of this set were smart enough to include the original theatrical cut of the movie with the new extended version. So, you can safely replace your old copy with the new one. The benefits of this are some really cool featurettes on the second disk and a crisper, higher quality picture on the film you already know and love on disk one.

That Thing You Do- Directors Cut
Review created: 09/16/09

I enjoyed the standard cut of "That Thing You Do" very much. So much that I was left wanting to see more of the movie. So I was thrilled when The Directors Cut became available. And I wasn't disappointed. The added scenes actually make the continuity of the film even stronger. I would've released the film with the deleted scenes. There is more character foundation and it seems to make more sense, which is testament to fine writing and directing. You won't be dissatisfied. There is also an extra DVD with music videos, cast reunions, mini documentaries, and trailers, all worth watching!

That Thing You Do DVD Directors cut. Wonderful!!

I bought this DVD because I love the movie "That Thing You Do". I saw the extended version on one of the Direct TV movie channels and could never find it again to TiVo. I'd only caught the last half hour and I saw scenes that were new and fun. After recording multiple editions of the original I looked for the extended cut on eBay. There were many choices and I selected the least expensive. It was from a seller that had high feedback. The DVD arrived quickly and I can't think of one negative thing about this transaction.

My only concern on ebay is that anyone can look up the things I buy by searching my ebay ID. I feel it's no ones business but my own what I but unless I choose to disclose the information. With that being my only negative point on eBay. I would recommende eBay and the seller of this DVD highly.

Perhaps the most amazing piece of cinema ever produced. I've watched it 50-1,000 times. Watching it right now, actually. Buy it. If you don't like it, I don't like you.

  I am spartacus! Good movie

Its a really good movie. Interesting thing about it though; the bass player never gets a name in the movie. Listen close and you'll see they never say his name. The credits show him as "bass player" even though he was one of the main characters.

  That Thing You Do! Dvd!
Review created: 04/07/09

This has been my favorite movie since the first day I saw it when I was seven. The pricing and shipping was completely reasonable. Having my favorite movie uncut with LOADS of extra features? Priceless. I love this DVD more than anything. I loved the price I paid for it. I would do nothing differently!

I bought this movie because Tom hanks and Tom Everett Scott are in it. This movie is about a band making it big and all the ups and downs that go with it. This is a a movie that you can watch more than once and it still not be boring. I recommend it.

Entertaining From Beginning to End - TTYD Delivers Fun!
Review created: 01/11/09

Maybe Tom Hank's best piece of work ever, as he is so totally indulged in every aspect of this movie's creative development. Music, story, characters, directing and a key role, all mastered by Hank's. This is an excellent story - and for those who have lived through the life of starting a band and trying to make something of it - you will know the pure truth of every aspect of this movie. Absolutely perfect casting sets up this delightful adventure that exposes relationships between those as deep as immediate family, lovers, supervisor/employee, to those as shallow as co-worker/peers and picking up a hot barmaid. The props are very authentic, the musicianship of the actors is spot-on and the story is positive, happy, uplifting and suitable for the whole family to enjoy. You won't regret the time spent watching this movie the first, tenth or one-hundredth viewing!

This "Thing" is well worth the time and money!

What I like about this edition of the movie "That Thing You Do!" is that it is an extended edition, which features an alternate ending, which goes down rather well, for me, any way, as well as a deleted scene involving the character of Lloyd, Mr. White's driver. Rather interesting.

I decided to buy it just for these very resaons, and I recommend it to anyone who is a disciple of the beautiful fable involving pop music, as I am.

  Great, fun movie!

I have had a copy of this movie for about two years now, and all I can say is...I can't get enough! That Thing You Do is up beat, fun and I love how the movie was written, directed and the music is GREAT! I'm 36 and my kids ages 12, 6 and 5, and they love the movie and music just as much as I do. So much, in fact, I have owned the sound track for going on two years! I don't know anything about the newer copy, but all I know is that I don't know anyone who wouldn't like this movie! Tom Hanks gets 5 stars from me and my family!

I love this movie. It is funny, sweet romantic and the best part it resembles the music industry in the early years. I reccomend it to anyone who has a soft spot for fun music.

I saw the movie on HBO originally and was so taken in by its snappy beat and fluidity of plot that I decided I had to have it in my personal library. This is one movie that will transport you back to the sixties. Two thumbs up
