timeless detective FUN~ and they have a dog too~

Nora Charles is rich and married to former police Detective Nick Charles. Nick is always JOKING he married her for her money but we see a healthy love between them that keeps us entertained and laughing. Nora always want to help solve the crime. Toss in the great and funny colorful characters like RainBow Benny. DVD one has the Charles on the hunt for a body that is not there YET. What is the fun is at the end Nick stages a big WHO done it group and we get to rule out the less guilty because generally everyone there has some kind of motive but we see Nick and Nora skills at UNMASKING the real killer at the end. The fun part is seeing how they do it. Their is a lot of timeless humor which is well written dialog.Volume one I give a 10 out of 10 . After The Thin Volume 2....I give this one a solid 7 out of 10 ... has us looking for a missing husband who is anything but good. SEE a very young JIMMY STEWART in this one~ worth the watch for him. Another Thin Man volume 3..I give this one a 9 out of 10.... is My second favorite in the group.....Nick and Nora and their new baby are drug in the country to a clever staged murder along the way we see bodies disappear and reappear and a disappear and what is really of the BEST mystery in the series and how they did it...Toss in a scene where Nora is "pretending" to be an old flame of Nicks to ferret out a clue and all hell breaks loose in the night club~ funny funny~ and the BEST Baby Shower Birthday .....~ fun~ Shadow of the Thin Man Volume 4...I give this one a 6 out of 10 has them chasing down a race track murder...good ...
The Thin Man Goes Home..I give this a solid 7 out of 10 ...GREAT mystery Nick and Nora travel to Nicks home town and we see his father and his disappointment of his son being a "worthless detective" very good~ ....the Song of the Thin Man .OK I give it a 6 out of 10 ..last of the series is the pair solving the death of a SCUM who everyone had a very good reason to kill he was blackmailing everyone~ Fun to watch over and over. The Characters and Mystery never drag. the Dialog sparkles~ Toss in a dog who is always dragging them or chewing up clues or saving the day. one of the more comic signs of the times is Nick loves to drink we never see him driving or being totally drunk just liking to "consume" it. and it is an on going joke of the times~ BEST of the classic comedy detective stories and the Lovely never aging Myrna Loy is tops ~ Also see....I Love You Again another Powell/Loy classic movie~

What a treasure! This set contains the original hit movie "The Thin Man" and all five sequels. While all six movies are well-done, the original movie and "The Thin Man Goes Home" are the best. As a bonus, the set also has a seventh DVD containing the documentory profiles of William Powell and Myrna Loy. There are also lots of bonus features scattered throughout the six movie DVDs. Watch Nick and Nora from 1934 to 1947, as they solve great mystery cases. If you like either William Powell or Myrna Loy, you'll like the comedy, warmth, mystery, and entertainment of these six movies. If you're a mystery buff, like I am, then these are just what you're looking for.

  Timeless Classics!!

This is the most wonderful collection in my library. It takes you back to a simpler and happier time. This is not to be missed, the Golden Age of Hollywood is really gone, this collection confirms it for you, but at the same time you can forget the present and just enjoy a real mini vacation from your troubles. So, sit back, press play and let the magic take you away.

The collection comes in its own box, with extra features that include biographies of the stars William Powell and Myna Loy. This is a nice treat!! The recordings are clear and the sound is great considering how old these movies really are. This is a great buy and at a great price.

I have watched the classic "Thin Man" series for many years. I decided to buy this particular set because it offered all of the Thin Man movies ever made with Myrna Loy. There is one other movie with William Powell as a detective(minus Myrna Loy) called "The Kennel Club Murders" and it would have been nice to have this included in the boxed set as well. However, that film apparently was the forerunner of the actual Thin Man series and perhaps it was not included in the set because Myrna Loy was not the co-star. These films are terrific if you enjoy light-hearted comedy combined with some pretty darn good detective work. William Powell is debonair and Myrna Loy is classy and fun...the two stars seem to be made for each other. I highly recommend this boxed set! FIVE STARS!!!

Fantastic series for the whole family to watch. I was worried from the package that they colorized the movies, but they did NOT. Thank goodness because that would have ruined it. I am soooo happy with this purchase. Everyone will find this series funny and enjoyable!

This in my opinion is one of the best series created. Nick and Nora are definitely from opposite sides of the track but their want to understand each other and Powell and Loy's chemistry make what would otherwise be a droll series come to life. The series provides mystery, laughs, suspense and a glimpse of the fast talking, wise-cracking fare that drove so many of the movies in the 1940s. Comedic timing, star chemistry, light mysteries and great "Hey! Isn't that X playing that role" moments (James Stewart is one)along with the love that Nick and Nora have for each other put this series in my personal top five list of best mystery movies or series.

These movies are great. My wife and I have watched them and it has been a great time of being together and watching well crafted movies. These are the type of movies that they do not make anymore. I am so glad I found them and would recommend them to everyone.

This is a great story about a couple who are also detectives.
Nick and Nora Charles, or Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Charles (which was changed from his father's original Greek name "Charalambides"), are fictional characters created by Dashiell Hammett in his novel The Thin Man. Nick is a retired private detective and Nora a wealthy society woman whose snobbish family thinks she has married beneath herself; Hammett modeled her on his lover Lillian Hellman. Their banter provides comic relief of the type that would later be seen between John Steed and Emma Peel in The Avengers. The couple have a pet dog, Asta, who is a female schnauzer (but became a male wire fox terrier when the book was made into a film).

The film adaptation of The Thin Man was a resounding success, and although Hammett never wrote another novel with Nick and Nora Charles, five movie sequels were produced. In the novel, Nick Charles is overweight and out of shape; the "thin man" is in fact a murder victim. However, Nick Charles was portrayed by the slim actor William Powell, naturally confusing the audience into thinking Nick was the title character. The movie producers capitalized on this confusion, and inserted "Thin Man" in the titles of the sequels to indicate Nick and Nora stories. Nora is portrayed by Myrna Loy in the films.

A radio show based on the characters ran from 1941-1950. In 1957, a TV show based on the characters ran two seasons in 1957-1959, starring Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk as Nick and Nora. In 1975, Craig Stevens and Jo Ann Pflug starred in the episode Nick and Nora from the Wide World Mystery television series.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_and_Nora_Charles

In 1991, the Thin Man motion pictures were adapted into an unsuccessful Broadway musical, Nick & Nora. It opened on December 8, 1991 and ran for just nine performances before closing on December 15.

Nick and Nora were the inspirations for two comic book couples: the adoptive parents of Mary Marvel, Nick and Nora Bromfield, as well as the relationship between Ralph Dibny (DC Comics' Elongated Man) and his wife Sue Dibny. They also lend their names to the main characters of a 2006 young adult novel by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.

I'm a fan. I like watching a movie and not seeing over the top special effects, violence, language and nudity. I can enjoy these movies with the family. The latter three movies in the series are not as strong in characters and story, but still entertaining. I have the series on vhs and wanted to upgrade to dvd. If you like detective stories and b/w movies I highly recommend this set.

I love The Thin Man and am so happy that I was able to get these movies!! They were new in the box and exactly as I remembered. I had been looking for a boxed set, but was not sure they made one. I am so glad that I decided the look for the movies on eBay; I was able to purchase the boxed set at a great value. No more waiting on the movies to come on TV; now I can watch them when I want to. And I do watch them all the time. I waisted so much time by not checking eBay earlier.

This is just an awesome series that I introduced to my daughter of 17/18yrs old. We just love the good clean humor and black and white series. These are great for family night at the movies at home on the big screen. Kids will laugh, and I couldn't recomment the series more. There is even a dog in it for the kids to fall in love with. Mad cap humor. Rating above reproach.
Enjoy!

I really enjoy the "old Movies" because many of them were new in the theater when I first saw them. Having seen The Thin Man movies, I know that the transfer to DVD was done perfectly. There is nothing I don't like about the
collection. I may not see the special effects in todays movies but I know nothing will be said to make me blush and I won't have to turn them off when my grandchildren come in.

Great Family Movies

If you like the oldies, This Classic series is for you. They are funny without being vulgar, gratuitous, using violence or the use of hideous images, sex or any other shocking mind numbing visual effect that Hollywood throws out on the screen today.
These are talented Actors and Actress’s that put an effort into the plot, and the plot is a bit complicated but not if you are enjoying the movie. These are great to watch if you want to laugh, see a period of time in which America (Hollywood) was at it’s best with the Movies it was producing , although the technology may have not been as good, I enjoy seeing these movies over and over again.

  Thin Man Rules!
Review created: 10/13/06

I had been trying for a couple of years to find all the individual CDs that make up this collection, with no success. I would have been content to rent them on a regular basis, but struck out in that ballpark as well, since none of the major online rental entities carried all of the movies in the collection. Imagine my delight and surprise to find them all in one place, at a very reasonable price, on Half.com. I burned my "tennies" to place an order and secure the collection before some else beat me to it. I am thrilled, and look forward to enjoying these movies. The dry, humorous and snappy repartee between my favorite movie couple never ceases to amuse me, as it has countless movie fans in the successive years since these films were made. They wrote the book for a thousand movies to follow, and set an almost impossibly high standard to be met by those who would attempt to write and act out a great story line with humor and panache. This is a great series, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves the old films of a bygone era. These movies are charming and entertaining, and if children are old enough to appreciate them, good viewing for the entire family. No need to worry about vulgar languare, gratuitous violence or hideous images. There is a tendency of the characters to imbibe in their favorite alcoholic beverages to excess, but it is generally in good taste.

I love the Thin Man movies. The first time I ever saw one, my husband had hauled it home for movie night. I remember getting so annoyed with him because here he'd hauled home one of his old movies, which I rarely care for, and his description of it didn't sound too appealing. Needless to say, he didn't do it justice. I watched it and I loved it. Since then, I've watched 4 of them and I recently ordered the whole set on DVD for my husbands birthday. These movies are great because they're funny and they're clean (ie no nudity, no pools of blood everywhere, no bad language, etc.) so the whole family can watch them. I don't have to worry about them putting in a Thin Man movie. It's sad that I can't even rely on a Disney film being clean anymore.
