Thief (DVD, 1998, Special Edition)

An early Bruckheimer production, Theif gives you many looks you would later see in Beverly Hills Cop, Gone in 60 seconds, etc... The story line was a little weak but the action and insight into the safe-cracking business was very well done. James Caan plays a great tough guy, and look for a very young Jim Belushi(James). Also if you like the late 70's early 80's cars, dress, and attitude, then this is a good movie for you.

This one came out of nowhere. I'm a big fan of director/producer Micheal Mann. This is the man who gave us "Last of the Mohicans" (find a movie with better scenery) and "Heat", a super character study of a thief and the cop who's pursuing him. Sure, Mann has made a couple of clunkers. He was Executive Producer of the TV series "Miami Vice", which he directed for the big screen. It didn't translate that well. But watching "Thief" is like watching the practice run-through for "Heat". This movie is a terrific study of a thief, who wants to retire, and those who refuse to let him walk away. This film was done early in the career of Mann, and it's easy to see that he had a bright future.
There are few directors you can count on by name to provide consistantly good entertainment. Micheal Mann is one who will, more often than not, leave you with the feeling you've gotten your money's worth.

I have been in the alarm industry for over 30 years as a burglar alarm repairman / supervisor. This is as close to the real thing as it gets. The acting is awesome.

one of the most underrated films of our time. I purchased this film again because its directors cut. Also you can not find this movie at any best buy

a true crime drama, perhaps the very best movie of james caan's career, suspense, action, a view of the criminal life & the after effect that might befall a person given to a life of crime. The music of tangerine dream used in this film helps make Thief the cult classic that it is. I had seen the movie when it first came out and looked for a long time for it on vhs or dvd, thhis is why I bought it.
