Album Notes The Asteroid #4: Eric Harms, Adam Weaver, Ryan von Kried. Personnel: Aislim Van Kried (vocals); Scott Vitt (guitar); Damine C. Taylor (bass instrument). Following in the footsteps of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, whose if-you-love-something-love-it-even-more aesthetic kickstarted a wave of unabashedly retro neo-psych among indie rock circles in the mid '90s, the Asteroid No. 4 make no bones about seriously digging the Byrds--and basically anyone and everyone who was tripping in Laurel Canyon in 1968--on their fifth full-length, THESE FLOWERS OF OURS: A TREASURY OF WITCHCRAFT AND DEVILRY. Released on BJM leader Anton Newcombe's label, the Committee to Keep Music Evil, THESE FLOWERS finds the Philadelphia sextet further honing their sundappled sound and spiking the standard Byrdsy jangle with the immersive sonics and intensity of early '90s shoegazers. By tapping into the euphoric properties of noise--to the best effect on songs such as "Let it Go" and "I Look Around"--the band finds their own patch of grass in a pasture crowded by like-minded but lesser bands.
Editorial Reviews With all the hallmarks of the classic folk rock album on display -- a bit of harmonica, loud, jangly guitars and cheery vocal outros -- it's hard not to enjoy it. Clash
