I love history, and this book profiles the history of 150 popular hymns, most of which I learned in church. I bought my first set of "Then Sings My Soul" in 2004. I have recently purchased 2 more sets as gifts for my Christian coworkers.

This is a really nice book telling about the history of a number of hymns and about the lives of the song writers and poets. I bought this copy on eBay because it was an affordable used copy. I had already bought a new copy of the second volume.
I am a choir director and church organist, and it is interesting to me to know about the history of hymns. I like to learn about why the hymn was written and under what circumstances, for it is inspiring to hear about the faith of Christians in the past. Obviously these hymns have stood the test of time to inspire us.

This book is well written and the stories are captivating. It makes the Hymns even more meaningful to know how they came into exixtence. The only thing I wish was different is that it would be in hardback. This book was recommended by a friend and I decided to buy one and I'm glad I did.

Incredibly informative & interesting book!!Book is set up wonderfully, with songs in alphabetical order. Each song has 2 pages devoted to it. The 1st page includes the musical score and words. The history behind the song and/ or composer is on the 2nd page. Some awesome songs are shown, and unknown verses are included.
I bought this for my Mom and now it looks like I'll have to get another copy for myself!

) Having owned Volume 2 of Robert Morgan's history of hymns and gospel songs, I knew what to expect with this book and I was not disappointed. Mr. Morgan has a way of telling a story with each hymn history that is more than a simple who-what-where-and-when. In many instances you learn the "why" which brings the songs to life even more.
I recommend it for those who are not heavy readers. Each history is condensed to a one-page length which can be digested while you sit ON HOLD waiting for your call to be "answered in the order in which was received". Got another minute? Read another page. You won't be sorry!
