Join Burt Munro (played by Sir Anthony Hopkins), a motorcycle super-enthusiast, on his journey from from New Zealand to the Bonneville Salt Flats where he sets the world record for streamlined motorcycles 1000ccs at over 200mph in his 1920 Indian Scout. This bike was designed for a top speed of 54 mph. The record he set in 1967 still stands!

Burt is befriended by a transvestite, an El Salvadoran used car salesman and a Native American named Jake who shares his secret cure for prostate problems.

This is a feel good film of the first order. The fact that is based on the true story of the real Burt Munro makes it even better. You will be cheering "Go Burt Go!" more than once as you root for him as he makes his dream come true.

I loved this movie when it was in the theater. I wanted my own copy so purchased it on e-bay. The e-bay seller took my money but never sent me the DVD and won't amswer my e-mails.

I will try again but this was a very bad experience.

The movie is great and would recommend it to anyone who wants a "feel good" movie and loved motorcycles or Anthony Hopkins.

This was a great film hopkins shows just why he is a great actor. This movie is based off a true story of Herbert J. "Burt" Munro who set the land speed record of a motor cycle under 1000cc topping over 190mph. His records still stand after almost 40 years. Hopkins portrayal of munro did a great racer a great justice this is a must own film. It's a story of doing what people say can't be done. And then doing it with guts and a determined attitude

I bought this DVD because of an article in Cycle World magazine.

The movie was excellent! Linda loved it too, and she has never even been on a bike.

The movie centers on a 1920 Indian Scout motorcycle. It is very down to earth, it is almost like you are there, and it is so "Real world"! No hollywood artistic liberty that I noticed. There was plenty of action, but also humor, and has some scenes that bring tears to your eyes. I haven't enjoyed any movie that much in a very long time. If you liked Top Gun, and bikes, you should love this movie!

I enjoyed the movie greatly. I saw it at the Theater initially and wanted to own a copy. The first half of the movie was fine but the last half was not tracking and I was unable to view the whole thing. I believe that the people who sold it to me are no longer on e-Bay though.

This Movie from beginning to end is excellent. Sound, Filming on location and in the studio(which was minimal), Editing and Acting are all Top Shelf. It is a true life story about an aging man, his passion of self sufficiency, for his aging (like him) motorcycle and a place where legends of SPEED are made..HIs unwillingness to roll over and let new age thinking out do him and his OLD BIKE. This story will inspire you, if you have always wanted to do something worthwhile and thought it was out of reach to do, much less succeed. Keep trying, try and try again, YOU CAN SUCCEED. It also shows that people are willing to help when they see a TRUE and HONEST effort and person, trying hard and not being satisfied "WITH JUST TRYING". It has helped me get closer to accompishing and living my dreams in motorsports as a driver which i thought i was too old to do.I already have records for building one of the Worlds Fastest Cars...Keep on Rolling people, keep on Rolling..You will LOVE this Movie...

Anthony Hopkins is simply astounding. The man can disappear inside of characters so diverse and capture you so completely, that you have to wonder if his well of talent has a bottom.

This film is at turns charming, bawdy, fascinating, riveting, nerve wracking, hilarious, heartwarming and heartbreaking. As Burt Munro -- an aging New Zealand man losing his hearing, short on money, living in a shed surrounded by weeds, considered a lovable if eccentric oddball by all who know him except one small boy, and obsessed with making a 45 year old motorcycle capable of breaking the land speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats -- Hopkins takes us along for the ride every minute of this movie. The fact that this film is based on the true story of Burt Munro makes it all the more captivating, but a lesser actor than Hopkins might very well have lost us along the way. It is no wonder that the children of the real-life Burt Munro were moved to tears by Hopkins' portrayal.

There's a clever ongoing bit about the taste of Burt's hot tea, and you will also wonder a bit about how his lemonade might taste. Every scene is a jewel in this movie, and the cumulative effect proves that extraordinary films do not have to cost bazillions of dollars and take two years of computer-generated special effects to WOW their audience.

Burt is challenged by every imaginable obstacle standing between him and his speed dream: his failing heart may give out any minute, the journey around the world to transport the 1920 Indian motorcycle to the USA seems insurmountable, he has no machine shop or whiz-bang tools and equipment to work his engineering miracles, etc. What he DOES have is an indomitable spirit that will never, ever stop trying. Whether he's battling young ruffians who diss his ancient motorcycle or banking, bureaucrats and red tape, he is a wrinkled but worthy warrior.

The supporting cast is as beautiful and bizarre as it gets, and the audience becomes inordinately fond and just about every one of them except for a nasty foreign cabdriver (Carlos Lacamara), but hey, somebody had to be disliked. Great actors in small roles abound, including Diane Ladd as Ada, a frontier gal that's been lonely a while, Saginaw Grant as Jake, an "Indian" with a really distasteful solution to Burt's prostate problems, and Paul Rodriguez as Fernando, a human and humane used car salesman. Perhaps the best scene -- and heart -- stealer is Chris Williams as Tina, a cross-dressing front desk night clerk at a fleabag hooker hotel. You gotta love him. Or her, as the case may be. Stellar performance, and Hopkins' Burt treats Tina with such dignity it defines friendship.

Don't miss this fine, fine film. And if there is justice in the boffo box office world, The World's Fastest Indian will be a true Oscar contender in 2006.

I don't buy movies but this one is a must have!!! It's a true story and that just makes it even more special. This is NOT a guy movie, (as I thought before I viewed it) this is a Whole Family Movie. It's just a heart touching movie of determination and percerverence. The movie takes you from start to finish of the character's will to make his dreams come true. (without giving too much away) It's a very inspiring movie! It makes you believe you can accomplish anything you set your heart and mind to. This is a definite MUST for your video library! You must see this film...it's got "Oscar" written all over it! Anthony Hopkins did a brilliant job! Don't miss out!...and don't forget your kleenex.

I loved Anthony Hopkins as the lead. he did a awesome job of portraying Bert. I love a movie that leaves you feeling uplifted and entertained. if i had to pick something i didnt care for, i suppose it would be the transvestite in the movie. But for hollywood, i suppose it was a fairly tame transvestite. If that really happened to Burt, well than so be it, but I cant help but think that Hollywood was mearly injecting thier agenda into another movie. but thats just my opinion, hope it helped. but it was a great movie.

True Sagaof quest for land speed record,A1 performance
Review created: 08/03/06(updated 08/03/06)

Initially I, rented the movie, as I was unable to see it in the theater, because of limited screening. I enjoyed this adventure saga Hopkins is brilliant in his portrayal of the somewhat quirky mechanical genius who modifies a stock Indian motorcycle with hopes to break the land speed record. Based on a true story, Hopkins shows how far a creative, innovative, stubborn individual takes on large sydicate teams with coporate pockets and shows just what can be done on a shoestring with a little bit of luck. His quest is interesting in itself, but the eccenrtic characters he encounters who help him along the way make the movie more than your usual quest for speed/motorcycle movie. Having seen it I had to buy it to add it to my collection of favorites.
Excellent!

The accents take some getting used to and the story line tends to wander, but all in all it is a great movie for someone who loves bikes and tinkering on them.Considering Bert went to the flats 9 more times I was disappointed the movie did not cover those events.Oh well, mabye in the sequels...

  A GREAT FAMILY SHOW
Review created: 02/12/09
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great, heartfelt, family movie. There are 2 scenes where the main character wakes up in bed with a woman friend. But it's done without overt sexual content. Actually, they are benign in comparison to most movies these days. I would let my 10 year old grand daughter watch this movie.

This is a true story about Burt Munro, from New Zealand, who bought a 1920 Indian Scout motorcycle, when it was brand new. (It was the 627th Scout built. What a coup!) He raced it during his lifetime, always tweaking the mechanics of it. He even melted scrap metals and poured his own pistons. He borrowed the
neighbor lady's carving knife to carve the treads off his tires! The main story is how he, at about 65 years of age, worked his way to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to finally have his Scout's performance timed. His great dream was realized.

The movie shows a warm relationship between Burt and the 10 year old neighbor boy, who I figure learned a lot of stick-to-it-ivness from Burt. Burt lived in a 'shed' as he called it. It was one room, a shop actually, with a bed, eazy chair and cooking facilities. He lived sparsely but his life was full. What more did he need? The movie doesn't share with us whether he had a bathroom.
It did make a point of him 'watering' his lemon tree every morning. He raised some fowl for his breakfast eggs.

Burt had a great support group of friends. He was challenged to a race by a gang of young bike riding thugs. They make another appearance later in the movie.

When Burt finally gets to America he is struck by the differences in the way of life. He chose the wrong motel, that's a sweet story in itself. And buying a car and building a trailer to pull his Scout to Utah is also a great human interest part of the movie. Of course Burt makes new friends along the way. He is such a down to earth, salt of the earth type of character people cannot resist striking up a friendship.

Well, that's what the movie shows. Check out Wikipedia for a bit more of Burt's story. He was an amazing man who perservered, living his dream. Oh, that the rest of us would do as well!

Anthony Hopkins is a wonderful character actor. He did such a great job as Burt that I forgot he was Anthony Hopkins!! That's the sign of a great actor! It must not have been difficult for Sir Anthony, born in the UK, to master the accent of a New Zealander. It was nice to see Diane Ladd and Christopher Lawford. I loved the character that was played by Chris Williams, he is Vanessa Williams' brother.

All in all, I highly recommend this wonderful movie.

I have watched this movie at least ten times .This is a great movie about a very unusual man. Because it is based on a real person and real events, makes it even more interesting. The special features section has interviews with the real person and brings more insight into the real person. If you are interested in motorcycles, racing, or just good intertainment, this is the dvd for you.

I love history of vintage motorcycles. The problem is with the subtitle of English is not included on dvd. I'm disappointed, because I'm hearing impaired and must have subtitle of English to read and know what it's about. I wish the subtitle of English works on that dvd. I don't know if I could replace it, but the seller said he doesn't have any more. Also, it won't work with closed captioned, too. I need to know where to get the dvd with closed captioned or subtitle of English. Can you help? I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Cory

This movie was an excellent movie! Anthony Hopkins gives a great performance as a very excentric man with a mission. It's a great "ride" to follow his dream. Excellent movie - could be enjoyed by the whole familu. I didn't think I would like it, but ended up enjoying it as much as my husband who's into the dirt bikes and machinery. I purchased this for him - he waas thrilled - and I get to enjoy it also!

I hadheard the movie was great. The I saw this seller's listing and knew I couldn't beat the price. I was a bit hesitant to buy because of the low price, thinking the product would be low quality. After seeing the movie, I was very impressed with the quality of merchandise at such a great savings. The price attracted me, the lay out was fantastic. I would definitely buy again.
