Perception Management or entire population mind control (national and world-wide levels)have been in use since leaders recognized the need to control what their people believe and feel so they could maintain power.

Reference President Bush's Iraq War as a recent Perception Management scheme.
Using the aid of the terrorist's attack in New York and Virginia, Bush and Cheney convinced the country that Saddam Hussein was to blame for the loss of American life. Although Hussein was a psychopath and could not be used or controlled by any other person (Osama bin Laden)as psychopaths (those born without a conscience)run their own ship. They trust no one. They obey no one. The do no one's bidding other than their own dastardly deeds.

Perception Management is simply the technique of arousing the populations' outrage over some concocted perceived atrocity and you can do anything (revenge)with the nation's (world's) Blessing.

Baldacci demonstrates how easy it is to use perception management to control the media. Than, the media is used to control the general populace.

The military is similarly used. Young soldiers willingly (eagerly in many cases) throw themselves in harm's way to seek righteous revenge against a carefully created enemy.

Government underlings fear to speak up as they fear for their own safety and that of their family's if they stumble into the game plan, possibly disrupting it.

Governments tell their people We Are Winning when they are losing.

Governments tell parents to send their sons and daughters to war so the Enemy will not come to our shores to wreck havouc, when the highly educated and sophisticated enemy is already embedded in all countries.

This book explains how easy it is to deceive us; the trusting, hard working, sincere, Shake 0n It agreement kind of personages.

Baldacci does use the old tried and true connivance of romance as a stimulus to violence. Ho hum.

Abused childhood so cannot trust anyone now - Ho hum.

Super duper giant who is almost indestructable - i.e. Lee Child's protagonist knock off. Ho hum.

Citizenry WAKE UP CALL - FANTASTIC!!!
