Album Notes Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Michael Nelson, Brian Gallagher, Steve Strand, Kathy & Dave Jensen (horns); Mr. Hayes (Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Tommy Barbarella (keyboards); Sonny T., Levi Seacer Jr. (bass); Michael B., Sheila E., Kirk Johnson (drums, percussion). Engineers include: Ray Hahnfeldt, Steve Durkee, Shane Keller. Recorded between 1985 and 1994 at Paisley Park, Chanhassen, Minnesota; Sunset Sound, Los Angeles, California; Davout Studios, Paris, France; Warner Pioneer Studios, Tokyo, Japan. In order to finish out Prince's contract with the label he abandoned for his own imprint, Warner Bros. released THE VAULT in 1999. Though he'd long since been called the Artist Formerly Known as Prince, our boy apparently wanted so little to do with this project that he had Warner use his old name on the album. The note stating that these songs were written between 1985 and 1994 and "intended 4 private use only" makes the artist's distance from THE VAULT's release that much clearer. In most other performer's cases, such a collection would be full of second-rate, demo-quality cast-offs, barely worth a listen. For an artist as prolific and versatile as Prince, however, it's simply another chance to glimpse the breadth of his mercurial talent. From the churning, Al Green-ish R&B of "5 Women" to the evocative piano-and-percussion-framed "When the Lights Go Down" and the sad, stately ballad "There Is Lonely," Prince is in rare form. Listening to these satisfying, fully formed pieces with the knowledge that they were never meant to be heard only makes one wonder what else lies in the Purple One's vault. Reviews Great jazz album from Prince's vault.. It was one of the last what I'm missing.. ¨The Vault… Old Friends 4 Sale is a collection of mostly unreleased songs attributed to Prince. The album was delivered to Warner Bros. in April 1996 along with Chaos And Disorder. However, instead of rushing out The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale at a time when Prince’s career seemed to have reached a standstill, Warners elected to hold off on the release until a later date.¨ from housequake.com Review ID: 10000000007478194 Was this review helpful? OLD FRIENDS 4 SALE was the last album of Prince material Warner Bros. released to clear out his contract. Using music originally recorded between 1/23/85 and 6/18/94, Warners gave us 39:21 of some of the best tunes in years, and a whole new way of looking at Prince. While "The Rest of My Life", the 1:41 opener is about the most "common" Prince song on here, the second song, "It's About that Walk" is a perfect glimpse of what the rest of the record holds. It's got the jazzy horns and swinging tempo prevelant on these 10 short songs, along with the lyrics we love him for. "A**... Now typically I wouldn t pay more than $10 for a CD with only 10 songs that didn t even reach 50 minutes long but I think this album is an exception. Here, Warner Brothers got their hands on a few songs that Prince might not have intended to release. The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale is a collage of material that the liner notes say, was written during the period beginning 1/23/85 and ending 6/18/94 and was originally intended 4 private use only. This original intention is definitely expressed by Prince in the cover art. It features him lounging backwards in a chair, elbow resting on the back of.. But there is still an incredible show of musicianship in the set of songs presented. Perhaps the greatest drawback to the album is its lack of cohesiveness. The Vault... was put together as a compilation of songs he recorded under the ownership of Warner Brothers. As far as I know he had no part in the putting together of the album. The album lacks a flow because the songs were created at different times in his career and lack any central theme or style. Depending on the style of music you like, or maybe even your mood at a given... Years of bootlegs have unearthed hundreds of those in varying sonic quality, and last year's Crystal Ball project was supposed to be an all-encompassing compilation of its most representative songs. But the fans will tell you -- most of his best bootlegged songs still haven't seen the light of day. Where were "Extra Lovable," "Wonderful Ass" and "Moonbeam Levels" when Crystal Ball was being assembled? Prince had another go-round at creating a Vault... Cons: Some of the songs are too short "The Vault" was released on August 24, 1999. The CD has ten tracks. On the inside of the CD liner notes it indicates that the material written for the CD was intended "4 private use only." Whatever the circumstances surrounding the release of this CD, I'm glad that it's available. It's a great CD. Here's my song by song breakdown of each of the tracks. The Rest Of My Life: This song is very reminisce of the Prince we have come to known and love in the 80's. The song is the traditional combination of funk, pop and jazz that Prince knows how to blend well. This song reminds me of "3 Chains O'...
