Jointly directed by Carol Reed and Garson Kanin, the final cut was culled from more than ten million feet of film shot by more than a thousand cameramen from a dozen-odd countries. While Dwight D. Eisenhower delivers an impressive prologue, it's the dramatized quotes from the lower-level participants, in a score of dialects, that make this film such an affecting experience.
