Captivating story of a family in turmoil with themselves as well as their neighbors.
One of the ten best movies I have ever seen.
Certainly not a Disney fairy tale but not seriously offensive to anyone but a real prude.

Bought it for my fiance, for his birthday. We loved it, especially the understated, natural acting of Kevin Spacey. Great story, too.

I HAD JUST FINISHED READING "THE SHIPPING NEWS". LOVED IT!-- A STORY YOU COULD "GET LOST IN". I WAS CURIOUS TO SEE WHAT THE CHARACTERS WOULD BE LIKE ON SCREEN.
AS IS THE CASE WITH MANY BOOK-TO-MOVIE ADAPTIONS, THE STORY COULD NOT MEASURE UP WITH THE READER'S IMAGINATION, NOT THE THOUGHTS IMPARTED BY THE CHARACTERS IN THE BOOK.
BUT. I WILL SAY I'M GLAD I BOUGHT THE DVD TO SATISFY MY CURIOSITY/ THE PRICE WAS CERTAINLY RIGHT, AND THE SERVICE GIVEN BY THE SELLER WAS EXCELLENT.
THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!

This is a wonderful story. I have the paperback and the audio book. The movie is a good adaptation from the original story. Kevin Spacey does a wonderful job as does Judi Dench. This is a great story. Enjoyable by all!

  Redemption at last!

The Shipping News is about a man who hates life, his father, and many other things that play into. He has a daughter with his wife, Bunny, but she isn't really neither a good wife or a mother to their daughter either. Tragedy struck early in the movie which caused Quoyle, and his daughter to go live in Canada with a relative. Throughout the movie one by one Quoyle finds redemption in his life where he thought he was lost completely. And in the end old curses are stripped and new life begins. It is a larger than life tale, and it is a great movie showing that redemption can be found, even in the small things. Can't miss this classic!

  Too good for the Oscars
Review created: 10/04/05

He is afraid of water, women, his father, car accidents, and his new career. But he will have to overcome all of that if he wants to survive in an environment unknown to him and all he knows about the weather.

Under the leadership of his aunt, Quoyle returns to the place of his ancestors; Newfoundland. It is May, and there is snow on the ground. She directs him to the house in which she was raised but has been unoccupied since before he was born. She assures him it is all "fixable" as she has to confront the memories which haunt her.

Quoyle soon learns about the curse, the "ghost", and many truths which he must explore, whether he likes it or not. He is portrayed by Kevin Spacey, who is very convincing as this conquering hero.

Overlooked by the Oscars, "The Shipping News" is based on the namesake Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Annie Proulx. It is a classic too good for Hollywood.

All The News You're Too Bored To Care About. 'The Shipping News'
Review created: 01/25/03

Pros:
Scott Glenn. The story, if you can manage to work out the better version.

Cons:
Screenplay. Direction. Other actors are off.

The Shipping News is the sort of movie that has a question at its core (even according to itself), and it s the sort of movie that needs one. The question at the core of it is (something like), Can a shy, inept man who has spent his life stuck in a rut, doing nothing, getting nowhere, change himself and get somewhere . That is, at least potentially, an interesting question (because right inside that question is the further question Can any of us? ), and the movie runs right alongside that question all the way through. In the earliest parts of the movie, as we see our main character Quoyle ...

The Shipping News - Throw it off the bridge and save some time
Review created: 10/29/04
by: CyndiA -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
The plot (in the book reviews) sounds interesting.

Cons:
Good grief. I did not buy this from the start. Nothing worked at all.

Shipping News starts off with the very clich scene of a father throwing the kid in the lake sink or swim. Yep. I m sure it was done. I know it was done. But, the dock toss has been done to death in literature and film. And, really now, if that is the very worst thing that happens in your childhood, then you are very lucky as long as you did not drown straight up when tossed in. That could be a problem to be sure. It probably did happen (ending up dead) to someone, somewhere, but it did not happen to Quoyle (Kevin Spacey). This guy manages to make it to adulthood with all his flaws and pretty..

Life as a house, boat, newspaper, sea, and swimming lesson

Pros:
Much of the sterling cast shines. Everything looks right.

Cons:
Poor Kevin Spacey. Must have seemed like a good idea at the time.

Somewhere along the line, the people involved in producing The Shipping News became so concerned with making a prestigious picture that they stopped paying any attention to making a truly good picture. After going through half a dozen different directors and half a dozen different stars since the release of Annie Proulx's award winning book, Miramax finally handed the project over to the company good luck charm. And I don't mean Gwyneth Paltrow (though it's probably a minor miracle that she wasn't cast here somewhere). I'm referring to that master of the respectful middle-of-the-road award...

Brilliant actors saved from storm of deadly criticism
Review created: 07/24/02
by: deaser26 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Beautiful scenery, delightful acting

Cons:
Dark story lines, no Newfie dogs, too much fish

Film from a strange dark land The Shipping News is a film rich in strange imagery, and odd characters. There are step-like rocks, towering above a freezing sea, lesbian grandmas, seal-knuckle pies, squid sandwiches, oil tankers, news stories, moose induced car wrecks and a whole lot of revelation. There is a lot of good writing, breath taking scenery and a lot of really good acting. This is a Kevin Spacey movie a delicious one, with a tremendous human drama and some strange second sight. There is a certain mystique about ocean faring men, and the weird mentality that comes with summers that...

  Extra! Extra!
Review created: 09/12/02

Pros:
Some lovely photography of Newfoundland.

Cons:
A tragic waste of capable actors.

I am absolutely exhausted. Three weeks of location shooting in Europe will do that to even a star of my magnitude and legendary stamina. Fortunately, we've captured the footage we need for my spectacular new film musical, Goodfollies, and I have returned to Chateau Maine in order to film the studio portions of the picture. I have so many tales to tell from our adventures on the other side of the pond - I'll have to get busy with my viewing and reviewing in order to get with them all. I departed from Hollywood for our first stop, London, at the end of August. There was some confusion at LAX. I.
