The Revolution: The Series (DVD, 2006, 4 Disc Set)

This History Channel series is hard to beat. One of the strong points of the series is that it doesn't confine itself to the same old historical accounts but manages to investigate the many human stories behind the stories. Of course the series discusses the causes of the war and the major battles, but it also offers firsthand accounts and numerous lesser known stories. For example, I was surprised to hear about the involvement of slaves as fighting men on both sides of the war. Also the detailed story of Benedict Arnold goes a long way to explaining the true reason/reasons for his treason. I know there are several other series out there dealing with this topic, but I can't imagine how any could be any better than this wonderful and entertaining presentation.

I loved the information it gave about the individuals we hear so much and so little about. I also liked how it interviewed authors and historians--this gave me new authors to read!

I purchased this series first of all, because it was offered in a set. It was to help my son in college to study for his American History class. I felt it was a way to review and perhaps add some visual recall to his memory, as well as auditory. I believe it was a helpful tool for him, and he seemed quite impressed with it. The professor he is studying under also uses this series in class sometimes, so it was certainly parallel to what my son had already been presented. I would make the purchase again if I needed to make the choice.

One of the best documentaries about all aspects of the American Revolution that I have ever seen! Great re-enactments and wonderul insight by historians on the key events and people of the war and interesting introductions for some of lesser known individuals who were involved. What a great teaching tool for students because it's fast-paced and will keep the attention of children.

Love this series. I learn something new everytime I watch it. One can usually find at least one showing of this each week. This is/was such an important time in world history. Perhaps more should see this series. One forgets that it took the US 8(eight) long years to win our independence and then another 3 years to set up a functioning government. It's a wonder we made it.

For an old history buff, this is very acturate and informational. I believe the protrayal of our founders is basically fair.
