What another great Lemony Snicket book! The Baudelaire orphans have found a loving home with Dr. Montgomery Montgomery and his collection of snakes. They can picture their lives full of adventures and coconut cakes until, of course, a series of unfortunate events rips that happy future away from them.

I love the author's explanations of words for those readers who may not understand the vocabulary. And one of the most charming qualities of this book is that it contains one whole page containing only the word "ever" dozens of times. He is telling the readers to never, ever, ever, ever...ever, ever, ever, NEVER play with electricity.

This book makes a great series for children who are slightly too young to appreciate Harry Potter.

The Reptile Room by Lemony Snicket

This book is full of my kind of humor! I love adventure books that are also just a little bit off. Dark isn't the right word, but close...dark humor with a twist, and a rather happy ending. You will have to read it to understand. Don't just rent the movie, experience the book!!! GREAT READ!!!!!

Meant for kids only...adults just don't "get it".

I found the first 3 Lemony Snicket series books at a flea market and brought them home for my 2 sons to read (ages 8 and 13). Mind you, my oldest child is not an avid reader while my youngest reads books voraciously. They both loved the stories (even my "picky" reader). That speaks volumes to me! Snicket has tapped into what kids like. Although, I can see how adults find the stories repetitive and depressing...kids (especially boys) only see the drama and the crazy adventures that the Baudelaire orphans go through. To them, it is not unlike riding a roller coaster without leaving your couch. ***3 stars

 Another Snicket book.

This series gets duller and duller. Following the events of Bad Beginning, the Baudelaire children go to their Uncle Monty, who studys reptiles and has everything the kids would need. But Count Olaf gets to them again. (Predictable). I really would not recommend this or any of the Lemony Snicket books to anyone. (But that's just me).

Book the Second Lemony Snicket If You Have Time
Review created: 08/06/01

Pros:
Amazing Deadly Viper, dry wit of the narrator

Cons:
little slower than the first book

Dear Reader, If you have opened this review with the hope of finding out about a simple and cheery tale, I'm afraid you have picked the wrong book altogether. The Reptile Room may seem cheery at first, when the Beaudelaire children spent time in the company of some interesting reptiles and a giddy uncle, but don't be fooled. If you know anything about the Beaudelaire children you already know that even pleasant events lead down the road to misery. Come delight in that road with me With all due respect, quasar This paraphrased version of the first paragraph of the back cover provides an...

Pros:
Not quite as heavy handed as The Bad Beginning.

Cons:
Alas, we get to meet a new character only to have him vanish.

When the first book about the most unhappy Baudelaire children ended, they were leaving the theatre where they narrowly escaped the clutches of Count Olaf. Now they have entered the care of Uncle Monty -- a herpetologist with a passion for anything serpentine. In fact, he just might be the best thing that's ever happen to the trio -- Violet can spend her time happily inventing, Klaus has plenty of books to read, and Sunny has made a most unlikely friend. For a week, in fact, all is bliss for the children, that is until the Professor's new assistant arrives. And it seems that there is...

The Baudelaire Children Get a New Guardian in The Reptile Room
Review created: 03/23/05
by: dragonfire88 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Interesting plot and characters

Cons:
Snakes. Uncle Monty wasn't around that much. Too dark for some children.

After being interested in the books in A Series of Unfortunate Events for a few years, I finally picked up the first book, The Bad Beginning. I enjoyed that book and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, the movie based on the first three books of the series. Since I enjoyed the movie and the first book, I decided that I wanted to read more of the books. In discussing The Reptile Room, I will mention things that could be considered spoilers for The Bad Beginning for people who haven t read that book yet. In that book, the Baudelaire children, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, became...

No joke, Lemony Snicket will scare the living daylights out of your kids.

Pros:
depressing, unfortunate, everything the book says. strong vocabulary.

Cons:
redundant, formulaic plots. pricey at $10 a piece.

Ever since Harry Potter has managed to grasp my undivided attention, I ve been on the lookout for good children s books. Lemony Snicket caught my attention in the search. Hailed as a rising children s book writer by Time magazine, and also having a series suspiciously titled A Series of Unfortunate Events , I decided to pick up the first few books to see what the fuss was all about. For $9.95 retail price, the second book is a small hardcover 190-page book complete with illustrations every forty pages or so. The decoration on the inside cover, particularly the words Ex Libris , wrapped in...

Just When Things Started Looking Up for those Baudelaire Orphans...
Review created: 11/26/01
by: JediKermit -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Wonderfully funny writing, great for older children and adults

Cons:
Too scary for younger children...

The latest series of books to capture my infinitesimal attention span is "A Series of Unfortunate Events," by Lemony Snicket. Like a cross between Roald Dahl, J.K. Rowling, and Edward Gorey, these books are ostensibly written for 5th Graders or so, but I love them. They're very dark, very wry, and very dry. Like stale rye bread. In a good way. They follow the misadventures of three children who were orphaned when their parents perished in a horrible fire, and these children are Violet Baudelaire, who's 14 years old and a budding inventor; Klaus Baudelaire, who is 11 and reads EVERYTHING; and..
