Unfortunately, the Baudelaires have not heard the last from Count Olaf, who returns with even more nefarious schemes and dastardly deeds. Having escaped from the evil Count Olaf--for the moment--in BAD BEGINNING, the Baudelaire orphans settle in with their new guardian, Uncle Monty, a kindly snake specialist. Unfortunately, these deeply luckless children have not heard the last from Count Olaf, who returns, horrifyingly, in the guise of Uncle Monty’s new assistant. Instead of an astounding trip to Peru with their wonderful uncle, the Baudelaires must contend with the evil count’s most nefarious schemes yet. This is the second in the bestselling 13-book series.
Publisher's Note Dear Reader, If you have picked up this book with the hope of finding a simple and cheery tale. I'm afraid you have picked up the wrong book altogether. The story may seem cheery at first, when the Baudelaire children spend time in the company of some interesting reptiles and a giddy uncle, but don't be fooled. If you know anything at all about the unlucky Baudelaire children, you already know that even pleasant events lead down the same road to misery. In fact, within the pages you now hold in your hands, the three siblings endure a car accident, a terrible odor, a deadly serpent, a long knife, a large brass reading lamp, and the reappearance of a person they'd hoped never to see again. I am bound to record these tragic events, but you are free to put this book back on the shelf and seek something lighter. With all due respect, | Find errors in the product description? Reviews Review created: 04/11/08 by: What another great Lemony Snicket book! The Baudelaire orphans have found a loving home with Dr. Montgomery Montgomery and his collection of snakes. They can picture their lives full of adventures and coconut cakes until, of course, a series of unfortunate events rips that happy future away from them. I love the author's explanations of words for those readers who may not understand the vocabulary. And one of the most charming qualities of this book is that it contains one whole page containing only the word "ever" dozens of times. He is telling the readers to never, ever, ever, ever...ever, ever, ever, NEVER play with electricity. This book makes a great series for children who are slightly too young to appreciate Harry Potter. Review ID: 10000000006670290 Was this review helpful? Dark isn't the right word, but close...dark humor with a twist, and a rather happy ending. You will have to read it to understand. Don't just rent the movie, experience the book!!! GREAT READ!!!!! Great entertainment for both kids and adults. Review ID: 10000000002918207 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 10/08/06 by: 3 of 3 people found this review helpful. I found the first 3 Lemony Snicket series books at a flea market and brought them home for my 2 sons to read (ages 8 and 13). Mind you, my oldest child is not an avid reader while my youngest reads books voraciously. They both loved the stories (even my "picky" reader). That speaks volumes to me! Snicket has tapped into what kids like. Although, I can see how adults find the stories repetitive and depressing...kids (especially boys) only see the drama and the crazy adventures that the Baudelaire orphans go through. To them, it is not unlike riding a roller coaster without leaving your couch. ***3 stars Review ID: 10000000002073261 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
