Album Notes Music and lyrics composed by Mel Brooks. Principal cast includes: Nathan Lane (Max Bialystock); Matthew Broderick (Leo Bloom); Gary Beach (Roger De Bris); Roger Bart (Carmen Ghia); Cady Huffman (Ulla); Brad Oscar (Franz Liebkind). Recorded at Edison Studios, New York, New York on March 11, 2001. THE PRODUCERS won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Mel Brooks fans take heart: The comedic master's cult film classic makes an absolutely brilliant transition to old-fashioned Broadway musical comedy, with lots of hilarious new songs that catch the spirit of the original. Lead performances by Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick stand up admirably to those of Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. Brooks's new compositions, like the brilliant patter song "Betrayed" and the opening "King of Broadway," are full of his trademark wit and irreverence ("The songs were rotten, the book was stinkin'/what he did to Shakespeare, Booth did to Lincoln"), and the songs from the film are brilliantly expanded. "Haben Sie Gehort Das Deutsche Band?" which only lasted a verse in the film, becomes a show-stopping production number. Special aside for Brooks cultists: Yes, that's his voice delivering the famous line "I was born in Dusseldorf, and that is why they call me Rolf" during "Springtime for Hitler". Reviews Review created: 05/13/08 by: I love this cd. It is filled with fun songs from a fun movie. Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick are wonderful singers and fill the songs with emotion while telling the story of these two unlikely people who become friends without realizing it until the end. Uma Thurman is excellent and I never knew she could sing. Will Ferrel is funny and sings great as well. Overall, I love every song and keep it in my car to play it over and over again. I heard this described as Mel Brooks Love Letter to the Theater and I agree. I got hooked listening to a few of the songs on myspace. I listen to this CD everyday!!! I am also going to get the Original Movie Soundtrack because I guess I just can't get enough..and I prefer the movie version of my favorite song "Betrayed". Nathan Lane is extraordinary! If you are interested in the creative process I would very highly recommend the DVD: Recording the Producers: A Musical Romp with Mel Brooks Review ID: 10000000003071422 Was this review helpful? With all the hype surrounding Mel Brooks' runaway hit, "The Producers," I curiously purchased the CD, fearing a letdown. Lesson to be learned - never prejudge. The CD is a sheer delight, with musical numbers so well constructed that the story is easily imagined, even without the help of a plot outline. On first hearing, several numbers stand out, such as the title song from the producers' intentionally tasteless musical, "Springtime for Hitler"; or the first act finale in which producer Max (Nathan Lane) trades sexual attention for checks in "little old lady land"; or the "Keep It Gay" number. Cons: It has a few profane words, some sexual content, and has Nazis. The Producers is Mel Brooks biggest achievement, winning 12 Tony awards, the most ever won! The Producers was based on Brooks old film The Producers , starring Zero Mostel (Max Bialystock) and Gene Wilder (Leopold Bloom). In my opinion Matthew Broderick (Leopold Bloom) and Nathan Lane (Max Bialystock) are much better suited for the parts as you can clearly hear on the recording; whether it s Leo s squeaky, mouse-like voice or Max s brassy, bold, and exciting voicing, you can draw a much better image of the characters. Cady Huffman is Ulla, Leo s love interest throughout the show. She is... BACKGROUND In 1968 Mel Brooks directed his first major motion picture The Producer it barely broke even. http://www.epinions.com/mvie_m Review ID: 10000000000502707 Review created: 05/06/01 by: kidhendrix -- a member of Epinions Pros: Funny lyrics, fantastic music, and excellent performances. Cons: I can't see the play! Mel Brooks has made some of the most beloved comedies of our time: "Blazing Saddles," "Young Frankenstein," and "History of the World Part One." But his most original, and arguably his best work, is "The Producers." Starring Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder, "The Producers" tells the story of two lads who dream to become Broadway producers. They realize, though, that if executed correctly, it would be more profitable to stage a bomb than to stage a success. So the two find the worst script around, "Springtime For Hitler," and put on the play, only for it to become a success. With a wickedly clever.
