| Synopsis Hollywood scriptwriter William Goldman pretends that he is simply editing and commenting on what purports to be a 19th-century fairy-tale by "Florinese" writer S. Morgenstern. Studded with hilariously anachronistic one-liners, this fantasy aims to teach its readers the important lesson that "life isn't fair," by placing considerable obstacles in the way of the romance between Westley, a talented farmboy who later assumes a somewhat more dashing and mysterious identity, and Buttercup, a sweet, dimwitted, world-record-breaking beauty who becomes engaged to the local prince. Goldman adapted the novel into a successful 1987 film starring Cary Elwes as Westley and Robin Wright as Buttercup.

Reviews  A Classic Tale's 30th Anniversary Remix EditionReview created: 05/27/08 by:  Don't bother looking for Simon Morgenstern in your local classics bookstore, and don't mind if the "abridger" Goldman can't keep from butting in to talk about his "history" with the story he presents. If you liked the movie, you will love the book, although you may love the movie more. I found the book very humorous, though on the dry side, and it will help if you have a somewhat ironic sense of humor. This 30th Anniversary Edition includes even more fun extras than the 25th Anniversary Edition, including yet another introduction as well as a guide with discussion questions for group reading. The cover is absolutely gorgeous, with a raised title on the front and on the spine. The font of the text is Adobe Caslon, and it gives the work a very refined feeling. Importantly, neither the front nor the back cover say anything that would lead the prospective reader to believe that S. Morgenstern was anything other than the great literary master Goldman presents him as. It is not inappropriate to suggest that this is the best edition of this book to date.
