Synopsis This short novel, originally published in 1940, is about an American in Paris who, at the home of a friend, encounters an Irish couple and their falcon, with whom they have an ambiguous relationship that centers on a power struggle. THE PILGRIM HAWK is considered a classic novella, and has often been compared to Faulkner's THE BEAR--not in terms of content but for its quality. The introduction was written by Michael Cunningham.

Industry Reviews "[T]his rueful novella muses with striking insight on the value and torments of love....[A]s befits a meditation on love, in the end the book is satisfyingly inconclusive." Atlantic Monthly - Christina Schwarz (01/01/2001)
"Rarefied, a little decadent, a little repellent, this is nonetheless beautifully handled." Kirkus Reviews (10/15/2001)
