Kelby has a sense of humor as he gives amazing tips and tricks to improve my photos using Photoshop CS3. I bought his first CS Photoshop book and was so impressed with it that I keep it handy on my desk at all times. Now that I've upgraded to CS3, I wanted Kelby's latest and greatest. He has not disappointed me!

  Photoshop CS3 - HUGE Capabilities!
Review created: 12/13/07

I bought this book as a required text for a local Community College Continuing Education class on Photoshop CS3. It was the primary training guide, although the instructor digressed considerably with more information from personal experience. I have a DOZEN PS instructional texts. You know, sometimes you just have to find one that "clicks". This one "CLICKS!", big-time with me. It's a full-color text, with step-by-step instructions on how to do some clever but necessary stuff to clean up below-agerage photos.

Our instructor spent a lot of time trying to educate us on NOT having to use PS3. A few minutes in the studio to get proper pighting, proper makeup on the portrait subject, correct focus, aperature, focus will all reduce the amount of post-processing necessary. But if you're a digital photo hacker like me, it's too late for all those older images and scans. You need help, and PS3 is ready!

The author spends just a bit too many paragraphs trying to be humorous. We got to the point where we were skipping chapter introductions, as they don't seem to belong in an instructional text like this. But the step-by-steps, with progressing color screen images to illustrate, are excellent training tools, and we learned a great deal from them.

At the end there's even a white-balance card, which our instructor said would last a few days in the studio before it was dirty and crumpled. Due to its large size, we cut it up, and made NINE smaller cards we expect to have a bit more life to them. You can spend $20 to buy a nice plastic one with a neck strap, but this freebie should last awhile with our cut-up action.

Actually, I haven't gone cover-to-cover yet. But it will be by my side when I'm trying to save a hopelessly bad exposure for the family album. PS3 can do the math, and this book can help you GIT-R-DONE. We found it for $28 plus S&H on Amazon, so don't pay retail! If you get a used one, make sure the white-balance card is still in it (in the back!). It's a real time-saver!

  Definitive Book on Photoshop CS3
Review created: 10/03/09
by:

Scott Kelby has established himself as the pre-eminent expert on digital photography and photo manupliation especially for those of us still using CS3. His book "Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers" is a must have guide to doing all the necessary things to take good photo's to great one.

Scott spends quite a few pages in the fron on Adobe Bridge which at first I thought was a waste. What is Bridge after all except a took for browsing your photo's anyway. Well I admit to being wrong in that assumption. His explanations and examples make Bridge an essential beginning step to productive photo work flow.

The Photoshop part of the book is still the most valuable. Scott focuses on real world needs rather than the glitz and useless niceties. Color balancing photos is probably every beginners biggest down fall, and Scott shows how to do it almost effortlessly with staggering results. Much of the book is focused on those tasks necessary to making photos great. But the best part is that he integrates that in with actually taking the picture.

If you are a beginner, intemediate or even an expert photographer, and you use Photoshop you should have this book in your library. I personally have taken pictures from shoots I did when I was starting out, really bad pictures I might add, and turned them into good content with the help of Photoshop CS3 and Scott Kelby. You might be able to figure out all this stuff through trial and error without the book, but you'll spend a ton of time doing it. It's worth the price without question.

This book is a great help-mate to digital photography. The authors sense of
humor makes the book (along with being highly informative) fun to read. The book tells you exactly what should be done to make your photography and editing
of your photographs a snap. I would recomend this book to all who care about their photography. I thank my instructor for using this book as a text for our Photoshop class. It will be my continued companion throughout my years of photography.

This is a excellent book with lots of details on how to do certain things in photoshop. I think that its intended more for someone familiar with photoshop and familiar with what alot of the buttons are but I did learn alot from it. It also teaches you alot of things about Bridge that I did not know. Great buy!!!
