Gibson portrays Benjamin Martin, an unassuming South Carolina widower who is forced to join the American Revolution when the British threaten to take his farm away from him. Together with his patriotic son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), the pair faces the vicious Redcoats with a heroism that reflects the stubborn pride of a young country's most dedicated supporters. THE PATRIOT is a sweeping epic adventure that sheds light on America's past, and at the same time entertains audiences.

Historic Brattonsville and Charleston were among the locations used. Gibson received $25 million for starring in the film. The character of Benjamin Martin is based on a composite of at least five historical figures, including Colonel Daniel Morgan; Francis Marion, "The Swamp Fox"; Elijah Clark; Thomas Sumter; and Andrew Pickens. Marion was from South Carolina, was famed for his guerilla tactics, and had a nephew named Gabriel. Colonel Burwell (Chris Cooper) is based on Lt. Colonel "Lighthorse Harry" Lee; Frenchman Jean Villeneuve (Tchéky Karyo) is loosely based on Baron Friedrich von Steuben, who trained Washington's troops; General Charles Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) is based on his real-life counterpart; and Colonel Tavington is based on Colonel Banastre Tarleton, nicknamed "Bloody Ban the Butcher." The final battle in the film corresponds to the historical Battle of Cowpens. Top Reviews Review created: 02/20/08 by: 5 of 5 people found this review helpful. This is fiction people! And for the most part it's good fiction. Yes, it does feel as long as it is (unlike "Braveheart", whose pace made it feel a bit shorter). And yes, there are some cliches, but the vast majority of "The Patriot" is highly entertaining. All those whining about historical inaccuracies should realize that this movie is not about the American Revolution. I mean, think about it: Do we hear the shot heard 'round the world? Does anyone ever say, "Don't shoot till you see the whites of their eyes"? Where's Paul Revere? No minutemen. "One if by land; two if by sea"? "The Patriot" is about a man seeking revenge and redemption. The memories of the atrocities he committed in wartime haunt him as much as the memory of his dead son. His country happens to be at war, and that is where he directs his rage. The story would be exactly the same if it had happened during the Civil War or the War of 1812 because the movie is about the man and his mission. You can't say the same thing about "Braveheart" or "Saving Private Ryan" because those movies were about specific people and/or specific wars. "The Patriot" is about humanity, and it happens to be set during a war. So enjoy it, and stop worrying about what type of canon balls they should have used. The acting was superb. Heath Ledger made an equally impressive appearance with Mel Gibson. This story goes straight to the heart with the authentic feelings of family love..and the challenges they faced during a war during a historical era of our country. There will be tears and emotional highs to experience watching this exceptionally well done story. It showcases the divisions of family members in the choices they must make. Plus the all the emotions, and loyalty the family members share in the life of a single parent family. Portraying a father of a large family of motherless children he must raise on his own, I feel this story is one of Mel Gibson's best performances. I found this title to be reasonably priced. The shipping was reasonable. It was a good way to renew my experience with a movie I had formerly enjoyed so well. Review ID: 10000000009020693 Was this review helpful?
