WOW! What an amazing movie. I had heard some good reviews about this movie and was intrigued by the premise... Can love - once lost - be reclaimed? Should it? The cinematography is outstanding and the story is enthralling! The movie was shot in China and the scenery is breathtaking. I loved EVERYTHING about this movie....the music, the dialogue, the characters....
This is an ABSOLUTELY wonderful love story. The chemistry between Edward Norton and Naomi Watts is GREAT and you truly come to believe in these characters. They are flawed human beings who through difficult times come to see their partner in a different light. The movie is wonderful from start to finish and when it was over...it left me wanting more! I loved it so much I bought the DVD and the book.

If you want to see what the most beautiful parts of China are like and not have to put up with the long air flight there.. here is a great example. I liked seeing China again more than anything else in this film. I love Somerset Maugham or I used to when I was very very young.... kept falling asleep throughout but I wanted to wake up to see what happened... so I'd have to rewind it again and again..Nice predictable story and if you like romantic dramas you will like this movie.

I was pleasently surprised by this moving tale that tells a love story beyond shallow romance. It reaches deep into the soul to define "true" love. But, guys, don't be scared away by the "L" word, this movie is not just a "chick flick". Neither female or male...rather, it is just "human". A first class, Oscar worthy movie! Don't miss it!

This is probably my alltime favorite Love Story, Edward Norton and Neomi Watts compliment each other in this film, The setting, the time, the cinematography are amazing, the era is timeless, I do not want to give the movie away, but it is a must see if you enjoy love stories and you like these 2 actors. I highly recommend this movie and glad I owe it.

An edible film, gorgeous scenery, superb acting, and a very realistic look at foreigners living in a strange land (China). Norton carries the film. He is marvelous.

I LOVED this movie!!!! It might be my favorite movie ever. I bought it on e-bay because I rented it & felt like I had to own it. Usually a book is much better than a movie. NOT in this case. I didn't like the book at all. They changed things at the end & made the story fabulous.

I absolutely loved this film. When I was watching it I was so engrossed that I lost all track of where I was and what time it was! Edward Norton and Naomi Watts have wonderful chemistry together in this movie. See it, you won't be sorry!

Beautiful Landscape, Color & Time Period DressI loved the Victorian Time Period sets. Things were elegant back then. Classy! Beautiful scenery revealed in China. I felt lots of emotion. Truthful & beautifully portrayed. I did not like the ending but, in retrospect...It had to end that way. This is a movie about adultery, betrayal, love, lies, hatred, sorrow, death & what more can I add to intrigue another person to watch it. I bought this movie based on the previews off of another movie. I was glad that I did. It leads me to believe that there is hope for the world through forgiveness. If you like some serious drama, then you will like this one.

A Timeless ClassicThis is a beautiful movie about love, mistakes, & finding forgiveness. You will find yourself completely caught up in the characters, the music, & the story itself. Moving performances by Norton & Watts, you'll want to 'reclaim' your own love by the time its over!!

This movie was amazing it kept me thinking the entire time. It's a very well done drama, not too over the top in my opinion. This is one of Edward Norton's better films which is saying something because he is quite a good actor anyways. Two thumbs up, highly recommended!

I really enjoyed the plot. I found that it was very emotional ( which I wasn't expecting it to be.) Further, the ending is really nice too. When I was finished watching it I wanted to tell my significant other how much I loved them. Very touching. I would definitely watch this movie over and over again. I would also like to read the book.

Elegent and sadI really liked this movie. It is a very elegent movie, set in old days with charming costumes and music. I love these actors too, they couldn't have cast this film any better. Seems so real to life as well, a woman who decides to marry not for love but to show the world, or more importantly her parents, that she could get married since she was their only child to have gotten older without being married. She decides to have an affair with a man she decides she does love just to find out she was made a fool, then finally in the prime moment she falls in love with the man she married only to have him die. I could watch this movie again and again. Everything fits together so well, I'd love to get the soundtrack.

In my opinion, this movie should have won an Oscar! I loved it and own it, keeping in mind I only own about 5 movies at most!
Brings tears to my eyes everytime I watch it, just like The Notebook did!

Fine remake!My first impressions from watching the movie was that the lead male role was mis-casted. Since Mr. Norton was co-producer of the film, I assume that is a mute point. Toward the end of the film, Mr. Norton was more believable in the role. Photography scenes were great at times; very acceptable acting; editing good. If their was one problem, the film stayed too close to the original novel/script. It would have been quite interesting to view this work with a more modern flavor. But it is, what it is--still a fine flick.

Foreign intruders in China, a never ending story, how many countries had to indure the presence of so called "Help".
Can we ever understand a culture other than our own? All we can do is to respect and honor the way others choose to live their lives.
In this movie a woman tries to escape her mother's nagging and insults by marrying a man she doesn't know.
She doesn't love her husband and instead of trying to find out who he is and what he is passionate about, she has an affair.
Later in the movie she realizes what a wonderful man her husband is and falls in love with him. Their happiness is short lived, when he falls ill like thousands of Chinese, the very people he tries to protect from the raging cholera.
Great movie.

Visit China through this stunning movie! Set in the 1920s, The Painted Veil provides a peek into rural life in the midst of a cholera epidemic. The scenery is beautiful; the music, at times, haunting. The Painted Veil is both travelogue and historical romance. All of the characters are perfectly cast, especially the stars, Edward Norton and Naomi Watts as Doctor Walter Fane and his wife, Kitty. They are so convincing, in fact, that I cried during this movie, which is both a travelogue and a historical romance.
This movie is rated 14A. It has plenty of sexual references although no actual sex scenes. Nudity is restricted to a woman’s back and a man's back and front (without actually revealing any of his private areas.) I would be comfortable showing this to my 14-year-old son, and I consider his movie viewing somewhat restricted. It would require a discussion of the central theme of the movie that I do not want to mention here because it would spoil the story line. There is some light social drinking and smoking and no swearing.
The back of the case sums up this movie quite nicely. It states that this movie, "Achieves the lost romance of Hollywood's Golden era." I do highly recommend it. It is a five-star movie.
