The Outsiders (1999, DVD)

The reason for buying this DVD is that I had a 45 year old niece that lived in Cleveland. Ms. Deal (Sherri) was a sixth and seventh grade teacher. She loved problem children and when no one else could handle these kids they would send them to her. Sherri was one of those people with that special personality that everyone loved. Every year, as an assignment everyone had to read this book (The Outsiders) and they would then discuss it.
To make a long story short, Sherri contacted a rare disease that took her from us. When I walked into the funeral parlor where she lay I was astonished. This large rooms walls were covered with eight foot long and four foot high sheets if white paper, completely filled with little notes and signatures. There were at least six maybe eight of them. There were large boards holding so many pictures of Sherri with other teachers, students, friends, family, and when she was younger.
There was an endless line of children, many weeping. I noticed a tough looking young boy that was really taking it hard. There were older people interspersed throughout the line. Many children had their mom or dad with them. A group of older girls entered the room and stood in a group near the back. They would get in the line then one would start crying and they would all cry and move out of the line. Sherri's best friend and teacher went back to them and stayed with them through the procession.
Almost every child was carrying a note in his or her hand and laid then on the casket. By the end of the night there was a stack that barely fit into a large plastic bag.
I went back to the signature papers on the wall and started reading them. I kept seeing notations "stay golden". The more I read the more I saw this inscription and the more I wondered what it meant. I finally asked someone what the saying meant. She explained that it was a saying in the book "The Outsiders" and that I might like it because of the hair cuts and motorcycle jackets and etc. She also told me that the school was trying to ban it from the school.
I was so inquisitive that I bought the book off of eBay and it laid for about six months before I picked it up and started to read it. I read about twenty pages one day then when I started reading it the next day I couldn't lay it down till I finished it. So, I'm hooked and bought the movie.
The movie brought everything into perspective but left out things that I was looking for. I was a teenager during the time this movie is about. I was one of those greasers and had the same hair style as Patrick Swayze and a black leather jacket with a spider web and "spider" painted on the back. I was always fighting jocks at school and was tabbed as trouble. It brought back some memories.
