The Orphanage (DVD, 2008)

I was unaware this was a spanish only movie..bit of a pain to read the subtitles, but it in no way interfered with watching the film..Movie begins with a young Couple and their Son waiting to open a care facility for handicapped children..their new home a old Orphanage where the Mother grew up..having been adopted she left before horrible happening engulfed the small inhabitants..the mystery behind the errie happenings will leave you awestruck..no scares here just old fashion nail biting suspense..this movie does have it's gory moments and the hanky scenes will break your heart..I give this movie 4 out of 5 bars..minus one for it being in spanish only!!

We bought this movie after a friend of my son recommended it, and I'm so glad we did! I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of the horror genre, but this movie is something special and I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. And that's not just because of the subtitles! The fact that the language was Spanish, (which unfortunately I cannot speak) was the only downside, but I got so caught up in the movie that I almost forgot about them. The characters were very compelling, even in another language you could feel the emotions. In some ways it reminded me of the Sixth Sense, not because of the plot line, but because of the intelligence of the script, the quality of the acting and the way the clues are there, if you could only see them. I would highly recommend this movie for anyone who enjoys a good psychological thriller.

I'm sure this would have been a good movie if I spoke Spanish. this movie had subtitles but then I spend the whole time reading the subtitles instead of watching the movie. So after about 30 minutes I shut it off.

I thought it would be more scary. 30 minutes into the movie i already knew what the ending would be. I haven't seen a movie that scared me in along time. Most of the movies that come out are based on the same plot with a slight twist..so in conclusion i give orphanage a C- for scariness a B- for originality.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who like horror films. I can honestly say that this is one of the best scary movies I have seen in a very long time. It is such a great movie. 5/5

i thought it was english version, the read the captions on english the whole movie, other than that it was interesting and scary, we liked it.. and reason why i wanted to buy it because felt like watching a horror movie and something new. and thanks again!

The orphanage is a great thriller. I love the writer. Guillermo Del Toro is an amazing writer! A must buy.

The Orphanage, does bring sophistication in ghost stories which is rarely heard of, but Guillermo Del Toro manages to pull it off time and time again, and somehow he even managed to inject his magic into this one, which he only produced - as this very much plays out like one of his own films. Not to discredit Mr. Bayona, though, for he has done a fine job. This is a dark, powerful, and moving masterpiece that both adheres to convention and brings some new, more artistic elements to the table in the direction and storytelling.

There was nothing about this film I didn't like. The acting, the thrills, the cinematography, the story, and the atmosphere. Everything was not short of sheer brilliance. The chilling moments freaked me out a couple of times, which I'm glad they did. That was what I wanted out of this film, but I was offered so much in return. Since I knew Guillermo Del Toro was involved with this project, I had a feeling it would be good. I just didn't think it would be THIS good. It was also very heart-warming, which was something I did not expect.

The acting is great, Belen Rueda as Laura is magnificent. Fernando Cayo as the husband Carlos is also good; he looks like a Spanish version of Josh Lucas. The kids do a decent job. And seeing Geraldine Chaplin (Charlie Chaplin's daughter) was a surprise, and she delivered an excellent performance as the 'seeing' medium. The bond that Laura, Simon, and Carlos shared is very sensitive and is carried out well throughout the movie.

This is definitely one of those horror films you should see more than once. The horror films you see nowadays are weak, not scary, and most of all; not worth your time. This one is WORTH the time. Believe me, his film has absolutely everything you need to know on how to make a well-executed ghost story and more.

Here is a movie that is supposed to be the best ghost movie of all time,well trying to stay awake was hard im a gore buff so maybe thats a reason but i didnt like it

THE WOMAN WAS RAISED IN THE ORPHANAGE UNTIL SHE WAS ADOPTED, YEARS LATER THE ORPHANGE IS HER HOME. BY THEN SHE IS MARRIED AND HAS AN ADOPTED SON OF HER OWN. HE IS ALWAY'S TALKING TO HIS "IMAGINARY FRIENDS" AND PLAYING GAMES WITH THEM. THEY THINK IT IS HIS IMAGINATION OR HE HIS LONELY. WHEN HER SON DISAPPEARS, SHE THINKS IT IS THE GHOSTS OR CHILDREN, WHO TOOK HIM, AFTER DOING INVESTIGATIONS. WELL SHE GOES THROUGH HELL AND BACK TO TRY AND FIND HIM, SHE STOPS AT NOTHING! CAN'T TELL YOU WHAT HAPPENS, BUT THIS MOVIE WAS REALLY GREAT! BUY IT! YOU WILL LOVE IT! DID THIS HELP? VOTE?

Personaly im ot a big fan of movies with english subtitles. I got to say that even douh you have to read the subtitles to know whats going on, the movie it self presented a great thrill. I almost didn't realize that it had subtitles. Movie is in spanish so kinda picked up couple new words too. I loved the whole plot, very good.

I loved the movie. It is not, however, in english so you must read the subtitles thru the whole movie. At first it was odd but as the movie progressed it held my attention so much that I hardly noticed. Very good movie, in my opinion.

This movie goes beyond terror and suspense movies. Not so much on the terror part but definitely suspense! The random clips that make jump are the best!! Great movie! Would recommend it!

I loved the movie. It is without a doubt an original movie compared to other horror movies. I was impressed to see that in contrast of other movies they didn't show as much blood or gore. I hate that now all horror movies have so much gore and you have to look away half of the movie. This movie build suspense in a very unique way. The end had both a sad and happy ending, which I personally thought it was very unique. I loved the whole movie as a whole. MMM...what else can I say without running the movie? (The end isn't one of those endings where you think someone is dead and all of sudden they move). I hate those endings they're just warning you there is going to be another one.

This is the finest suspense/horror movie I've ever seen! It is a truly edge-of-your-seat experience, without the tacky gore that recent horror flicks revel in. It is extremely fine cinema, in the tradition of Hitchcock and Shyamalan!

Hollywood watch out! This film is so good anything like it out of Hollywood does not even match up. I hate to say it I even think its as good or better than Polterguist. I don't like subtitles but it is well worth reading this movie. Great sets, photograghy, cast, and story all make this haunting movie worth watching. Made by the makers of Hellboy and Pans Labyrinth. If you have not seen Pans that is another must see.

I rented this movie because I'd seen "Pan's Labyrinth" and thought it held creative genius. This one was so good, so well directed and truly scarey without
the special effects, I bought it immediately after viewing it.

I really liked the Movie, and the story line. I did NOT like having to read subtitles through the whole movie. Sellers should NOTE THIS SUBTITLED MOVIE IN LARGE PRINT, I was unaware that it was all in Spanish and could NOT switch to English. I would not have spent the money to purchase it, and waited to watch it on tv channels.

I enthusiastically recommend this film to any fans of good old fashioned ghost stories. One suggestion, however, is that the viewer opt for English subtitles for the hearing impaired rather than the English dubbed version. Belen Rueda is simply too exquisite an actress to miss by a poorly dubbed soundtrack. The Orphanage is one of Guillermo del Toro's very best.
