What a TERRIBLE follow up to a great 1st CD

The 1st CD from Evanescence was a complete suprise. After hearing 2 of their tracks on the "Daredevil" soundtrack, I said to myself, "Hey, I like the sound of both the lyrics AND the rythm," so I bought the CD and was floored at the fact that every track was strong, still rythmic, and that Amy Lee (vocals) just completely rocked every single track with bold lyrics and a pleasant voice- that could be supple, yet turn right around, and flat out flex some serious muscle.

This second CD's approach had me eager to make a 1st day purchase. I figured after nearly 3 years of waiting, that this CD would surely rock. I am extremely dissapointed. Amy Lee screeches and howls like a wounded dog on almost EVERY track. She moans and groans like a school child that has to wake up early to go to school. This is NOTHING like the first CD. At times, Amy Lee just bounces her voice up and down and all around like the blue-alien-chick in that movie "The Fifth Element." This is downright PAINFUL to listen to. I cannot honestly roll my windows down and blast this garbage like I did their 1st CD. I would instantly lose my manliness.

Evanescence was the first and ONLY female led group that I believed could rock with the likes of Linkin Park and Chevelle. Man, they took a serious turn for the worse. They can now rock with the likes of the Dixie Chicks. These songs are exremely weak and have no energy whatsoever. It is just a huge racket. The beats, at times, can be OK, but those songs especially are the ones that Amy Lee just obliterates with a horrid voice and whining lyrics. What happened to her?

If you like their hit "Call me when you're sober" which I sort of liked, you will still be completely let down by this CD. What are they even singing about in this CD? I don't understand any of it. Stop moaning please. Geese, this is just PAINFUL in every sense of the word. All they had to do was keep doing what they were doing: but they failed. This is a "chick flick" cd. No male that honestly liked their 1st cd would EVER like this CD. Oh my gosh, I am so furious with myself for spending 9.99 on this. I could have gone to Popeye's for some chicken and been happier. I think Amy Lee says the line "All I stood for.." at least 100 times in this CD. How original.

The only halfway decent tracks are 4, 5, and 10. I can't say I enjoy hearing track 2 anymore (call me when you're sober) because is was played to DEATH on XM radio, I can't stand it anymore. But even these few tracks would NOT have made the cut on their first CD. The only song that is honestly good is track 12.

Conclusion: Save your money on this CD. And DO NOT see them in concert unless you want to see one of their openers, like Revelation Theory (now THEY rock!)

Definetly NOT as good as the first

I have followed this band from their beginning since I am in the same town. Amy Lee has incredible vocal abilities, but unfortunately she does not show them off in this album like she did in the last.

Their last CD is one of my all-time favorites...this one has some cool songs, but if you were hoping for another award-winner like their last one, don't get your hopes up.

Some very good songs, others are a little too deep to understand (unless you have read what they are suppose to mean), still others are too simple. Just not as good as the last one overall, but still worth buying (on eBay for a discount) LOL.

Talk about a Beautiful Voice that Amy Lee sure has something going for her...i read that her new album is more personal than her first one..this one she really poured her heart and soul into. It shows =) If you liked her first album then you will definately like her second one..the vocals are way better and she has really grown as a singer.

A+++++++++++++ Super album

Excellent Follow-Up CD to Fallen & Anywhere!

This has to be one of the best CDs out right now. There are many people who say that it does not follow Fallen and that it is awful. True- it is different from Fallen, but it is definitely not awful! As any true Evanescence fan would know, you have to know the meanings of the songs to fully appreciate them. This CD is different than Fallen, but the band has grown, and so has their music. If you really want to love this CD, find an interview with the band that explains the meanings of some of the songs. I can almost guarantee that you will like it a lot more. Another thing- it is also true that a lot of the songs do not sound like "Call Me When You're Sober" (not that that's a bad thing, but I think that is what many people are expecting, so that is why they are disappointed by the CD). Overall, the CD is great for just about anyone. There is at least one song you will be able to find that you can relate to in some way. A must-have for any CD collection!

I decided to buy it because Amy Lee has one of the greatest voices around, simply beautiful. Sure to be a favorite is Snow White Queen one of the greatest songs on the cd. Just a great cd with terrific songs and the beautiful voice of Amy Lee. A Must have for any fan. If your not familiar with this group buy this cd and enjoy.

  Good but not perfect
Review created: 10/12/06
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have nearly all of evanescence's albums, and when i got this one i realized immeditly it sounded different. The pros of the cd is:

1. the theme is pretty much the same as the other ones. It involves lost love, hate, and sorrow.
2. most of the album has a metal feel to it.(previous album had whisper)
3. Amy puts her voice to the test.
4. all around great lyrics.

the cons are:

1. the album goes from loud to soft, and vise versa quite often.
2. Amy tries to hit too many high notes.
3. too metal, not enough piano, and could use an acustic song!!
4. album ends without a bang. didn't realize album ended until i noticed 5 minutes later no music was playing.

In conclusion if you like evanescence you should get the album its not that bad, but its not amazing like fallen, but fallen was made over a longer period of time so its no comparison.

  HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL

THIS ALBUM IS HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL. AMY LEE'S VOICE WILL LEAVE YOU ENCHANTED. HEAVY RIFFS AND SOULFUL MELODIES MAKE THIS BAND AN ORIGINAL. CLASSICAL MEETS METAL. EVENESCENCE WILL TAKE YOU THROUGH THE OPEN DOOR WITH THEM TO A WORLD OF PAIN, LOVE, DESPAIR, SADNESS, AND EVEN STRENGTH AND THE POWER TO OVERCOME. THIS ALBUM IS MORE POSITIVE THAN PREVIOUS ONES. IT HAS A LIGHT THAT PERMEATES THE DARKNESS OF THE MUSIC. THE FEATURED SONG "CALL ME WHEN YOU'RE SOBER" IS ONE OF THE STRONGEST SONGS ON THE ALBUM AND MIRRORS AMY LEE'S REAL RELATIONSHIP ENDING. EXPERIENCE THIS YEARS MOST STRIKING ALBUM.

  "The Door Has Opened..."
Review created: 10/03/06

Amy Lee has done it again, moving on without her former guitarist and making another album that shows her dark lyrics that weave tantalizing spells around you mind, additcing you to her music. Her hit single, Call Me When You're Sober, if of course, on the CD, as well as her other songs, most of which hold the same Evaescence we've come to know and love from her previous two CD's that caught the most media, her winning CD Fallen, and her tour CD with a bonus new song on it from her, Anywhere But Home.

This CD HAS to be added to your collection if you love Evanescence, or if you just like her new single. A must for everyone!

Great follow up to their 2003 debut
Review created: 10/03/06

2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

With Evanescence's second album, we learn that singer & pianist Amy Lee was as much a part of the six-times-platinum sound of 2003's "Fallen" as now-departed guitarist and songwriting partner Ben Moody. We also learn that Lee is no woman to scorn. "The Open Door" is full of blistering attacks on those who have betrayed her, a list that starts with Moody but doubtlessly includes ex-boyfriend Shaun Morgan of Seether, the impetus for first single "Call Me When You're Sober." Fortunately, Lee and company—including former Cold guitarist Terry Balsamo, who suffered a stroke while making the album—have translated her heartache into another successful set of melodramatic goth/industrial anthems with touches of prog and even classical (Mozart's "Requiem") in "Lacrymosa." Those who embraced "Fallen" will doubtlessly fall even harder into "The Open Door."

This Cd is defintely not a disappointment. I have their Fallen Cd and think this surpasses that. There are definite similarites, but a fresh sound on several tracks as well. I never tire of Amy Lee's beautiful voice. Lithium is to me the best track on the Cd. Good lyrics, great instrumentals and timeless vocals from this band!

I decided to buy this CD after hearing "call me when you're sober" on the radio and video channels, and it was well worth the price. from the haunting ballads to the driving powerhouse Amy Lee delivers to the max and beyond! Not to mention the monster guitar sound and awesome backing vocals! Very well done Evanescence, very well....................I give it a 12 out of a possible 10

Amy's voice sounds just as good as the first CD. For those of you rating the CD so poorly, listen to the lyrics of the first CD and then the second CD. I mean really listen to the lyrics - then you'll get it. The CD is about life and something alot of people can relate to. You rock Amy!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Very original music and lyrics. Amy Lee sings with her soul. this CD is so captavating. Not the atypical sound that you would expect from a sophomore release. Evanescence has out done themselves and has set the bar very high, it will be interesting to see if they can excede or meet this level of creativity in their next project. As it stand currently I'm totally impressed.

The excessive melancholy from the first album is a little less evident on this new one, some great catchy tunes (yet nothing as radio-friendly as "Bring Me to Life"), good overall performances... nice album. The expected follow-up. Nothing new, all in its place.

This CD is definitely different a bit, and absolutely addictive to sing to track #2. I love all of Evanescence's Albums and Amy Lee! I have almost all of them and can never stop singing and just rocking out to their music anytime, anywhere, especially in the air, or on the road traveling!!! THE BEST CD OUT THERE!

Love the album, just dont love Wal-Marts price($15). Amy, as always, has an amazing voice and for those who listen carefully they will see each song tells a story, quite a rarity in rock music anymore. Would highly recommend any fan of rock music to buy this cd at any price.

  Different.

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I think this is a pretty good album, though it just dosen't really seem like Evanescence. Their sound did change quite a bit, and they do have more of a darker sound now, but it's just a bit too soft to level up to Fallen.

I particularly like the track "Snow White Queen", but if you expect most of the album to sound like the single "Call Me When Your Sober" you will be disappointed because it sounds almost nothing like it. But I love the fact that the CD has more of an eerie and dark feel to it.

The thing I don't like about the album is that sometimes the guitars just don't sound right with certain parts of the song that they're in. I also don't like that it isn't as unique as Fallen.

I definately think this album could have been better, but at least Evanescence isn't a one hit wonder. :-)

I was lucky enough to get a promo CD of this album to listen too. I do have to say things have changed with EV and this album is proof. It is a good album, it is not a great album. I was disappointed that this album seems to be softer in nature then fallen, it just does not have that punch that fallen had. It is a good album and will get radio play but is that really good news in todays cookie cutter world of rock music, I think not.

  Strong Sophomore album.

indeed, I did love the old evanescence, and even though I've had the new tracks to listen to for less than a day, I can easily say that my hunger for more evanescence was more than satisfied.

It sucks that the new album doesn't work for everyone. I guess I can understand. To me the new material sounds more feminine; the issues that amy bring up are deffinitely unique to her, though I personally can relate to a lot of them quite easily.

I really, genuinely liked what I heard. A lot more etherial and sassy than anything in ev's back catalog.

Deffinitely going to be an instant top 10 of mine, though not #1 ('Fallen' will always have that spot).

ToD has spawned my most favorite Evanescence track so far: Lose control. I'm such a sucker for a sexy-ass song like that.

I only hope it doesn't take another 3 years for the next album! If amy is in such a happy place now, maybe she should let john write the next album. He has good ideas too!
