Excellent Coin Guide For Buying Or Selling Coins
Review created: 10/02/08

I have bought two of these books in the past two months. The first one I purchases for myself since I just started buying on eBay for the very first time ( about two months ago). I had an old 1976 Hard-backed copy that I had as a kid which helped somewhat in determining what was rare; but I needed to know current prices to know how much to bid. The pictures and Condition Grading Guidelines are very helpful ( even for an amatuer). The second book I bought as a gift for friends of mine that go to auctions to sell on eBay, but they know very little about coins. This might help them determine if they come across a "good deal" in the future. They hope that this will give them the confidence to at least look at some of the coin offers that they come across. In comparison to my old hard-bound Guide Book, I wasn't sure if I liked the soft cover with spiral binding at first. I liked the way that my old book held up against wear. The new version is larger and more helpful than the old version. It is light and very handy to use. So far it has held up fine. It has given me the knowledge and confidence to make some great coin purchases already. I would give this book an excellent rating, and my satisfaction of using this book has been better than I expected. I would highly recommend it to anyone that is going to buy or sell coins, or for anyone that would like to know what their coins are worth currently ( estates, gifts, etc.). I was surprised at the difference in prices from my old book.

BEST in RED: Whitman's Official Red Book Guide to US Co
Review created: 06/27/08
by:

When RED is Best:
Although I have my reservations about prices guides unquestionably one of the most useful is Whitman's "The Official Red Book: a guide book to United States coins". This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in US coins, is an invaluable source of information, accurate data, historical perspective, and content, not to mention a long list of very distinguished contributors David Q. Bowers, Phillip Bassett, Jeff Garrett and Tom Hallenbeck among others.

However, all price guide books including this one are outdated even before they are printed, prices can not be updated with the frequency of collectible markets ups and downs, in the case of coins rare or otherwise prices vary widely day by day due to market conditions like commodities, speculators, collectors taste & interest, supply and demand, new hoard discoveries, inflation, currency value and time just to mention a few.

welcome to the fascinating world of numismatics.

IN THE KNOW with the OFFICIAL 2009 RED BOOK
Review created: 05/20/08
by:

This 429 page publication is an excellent source of information for current US Coin pricing. It contains a very informative "Welcome to Numismatics" introduction explaining the early beginnings of United States coinage and its mints and mintmarks. It covers coinage from the early Colonial days to the modern coins of today, including commemorative coins.

I especially like the size of the spiral bound book. The measurements are
6"(Wide) x 7"(Length)x 1"(Thick). Not too big and bulky and not too small
where the print is hard to read. The spiral binding makes it easy to open
to specific pages (I make use of paperclips to mark pages) and to fold completly back.

I also like how the book is laid out by coin type and then by each specific
year, showing the current pricing by the various coin quality and grades.

This book is a "must have" for any collector, or for anyone wanting to know
the current market value of a single coin or for an entire collection. It is
also a great source for historical information for all types of coins. I
also like that most , if not all , pictures of coins are to "scale"

But, the main reason I like this book is that it is a valuable tool, for providing accurate values, that can keep you from paying too much for coins
you purchase and to give you a realistic price for coins you want to sell.

Stay informed...but make sure you have the correct information !!

PRICE GUIDE FOR ALL US COINS, A MUST HAVE FOR BUYERS AND SELLERS
This has every price for US coins that have been made in the US, I keep it handy at all times knowledge is the key to buy and sell coins.Witout this guide it would be like selling coins in the dark you would not know the value of a coin that you want to purchase. I have 10 to 15 price guides, knowledge is the key to all collections, without a guide you pay more than it may be worth.
