Throughout the 1960s, Elvis Presley's recording career took a back seat to his movie career. A grueling schedule of three films a year--most accompanied by soundtrack albums--allowed Presley little time to produce non-soundtrack recordings. His label, RCA, was content to sell back catalog and soundtrack albums, which, abysmal as many of them were, promoted themselves. In fact, RCA was so satisfied with this situation that the label decided not to release a studio album Presley recorded in late May 1963 and January 1964, although the label drew four strong singles from the sessions: "Devil In Disguise," "Witchcraft," "Please Don't Drag That String Around," and "It Hurts Me." Finally in 1990, RCA issued the sessions as THE LOST ALBUM.
All of the twelve tracks on THE LOST ALBUM were released during Presley's lifetime, either as singles, b-sides, or bonus tracks on soundtrack albums. This collection, however, places the songs in more sympathetic surroundings. Standouts include "Long Lonely Highway," "Never Ending," Chuck Berry's "Memphis, Tennessee" and the four singles. All of these tracks can be found on ELVIS: FROM NASHVILLE TO MEMPHIS, the excellent five-disc Elvis '60s compilation.
