The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (2006, Paperback, Reprint)

If your a parent whose son or daughter hates to read, and you would love to see them start, have them read The Lightning Thief By Rick Riordan. This is a 7th to low 10th grade reading. But that shouldn't stop you if your older or younger. This book is about a boy named Percy Jackson who has a few issues. He ends up finding out that he's the son of Posiedon the sea god. Percy ends up at Camp Half Blood, a place where there parents are gods. Percy meets Annabeth and Grover his two best friends. Percy, Annabeth and Grover all get offered a very important quest. The quest is Percy and the crew have to recover Zeus' master bolt before the winter solstice. Along the way Percy meets some very intersesting people. I will tell you no more, so go out and get this book. Best book of the year. This book is also in a series called the Percy Jackson series, this being the first. The rest of the books are

This book was on my daughter's summer reading list, and boy am I glad it was! I tend to read books in the sci-fi and fantasy genres, so it was right up my alley. As for the book, the characters are gripping and their trials are harrowing. It's the stuff of legends of course for these half blood godlings! New readers get an interesting introduction to Greek mythology, while having fun with characters with problems they can relate to (ADHD, dyslexia, and being totally misunderstood by the world). My 10 and 11 year olds read it as well and were riveted. Hopefully this will spark an interest in mythology and they'll dig a bit deeper into the rich stories of the Greek gods and demigods on their own.

I probably shouldn't write book reviews, since I like almost every book I read. But this one was different. I actually read this book, and its sequel, The Sea of Monsters, both three times. (and actually cried when I had to return them!) This book is an engaging read, with a monster battle in the first chapter, against the protagonist's evil pre-algebra teacher. The first few chapters leave the main character (and curious reader) dazed and confused, forcing you to read on. The characters are funny and demigod powers more than mildly cool. I anxiously await the movie, began screenplay sometime around June of 2005, and book 3 of the 5-part series, The Titan's Curse, coming out in May 2007 :-( (I am posting this in Aug. I bought this for a book club. However, after the shipping costs, I could have bought it new at target for a few pennies more. next time, I will do my research. As a seller though, this seller is top notch. WDBWA.

I bought this book because the movie by the same name - is being released in the fall of 2009. I have, within the past 5 years, stated reading the book that soon-to-be released movies are based on. Many details can not be shown in the movie because of the time factor and once you read the book, most movies are just better. This story is good vs evil, with Gods & half humams being the characters. Should be a good movie, looking forward to it.

I have read the entire Series and although it has similar aspects to the Harry Potter series, this Author has put imagination and research into creating these characters. Fun for children or adults - light reading with good and bad guys - lots of new characters in each book. It kept me entertained.

My son liked the book real well. I wanted the book and the price was right. My son is always looking for good books to read.

Rick Riordan, a Texas author, has written an incredible series of children's books. Many have called it "The next Harry Potter," at which point someone always shouts, "No, it's better than Harry Potter." I think they're both right.

The Lightning Thief is about Percy Jackson, a sixth grader who discovers that his father is a Greek god. You know, those residents of Mount Olympus (which it turns out is now hovering over NYC). Yep, Percy is a demigod. And what do demigods do? They go on quests! And so Percy travels across modern America on his quest. Without giving too much away, I have to tell you that Medusa is running a roadside stand... selling concrete lawn ornaments!

Amazingly creative and very well written. The books are action packed. Short chapters move quickly from one adventure to the next. The Percy Jackson series will eventually include five books. The fifth and final book is due out spring of 2009. So far, each book is approximately the same length (which makes me believe Riordan has planned his plots very well and is a disciplined writer).

This book has been popular among my eighth graders for many years (though Rick Riordan is a local author, so that may skew the sample). But when the most recent book was released recently, I had more than a dozen kids reading it in class the very next day.

I bought this book for my childern because it is on the state's reading list for the schools. I aslo read the book and founf it very entertaining and a lot of creativity. It is the first book in a series of 4. I am looking forward to the nest in the series and the kids loved it too.

This is a good book. I bought it for my middle school library. I bought it because it was reasonably priced.

This book is fun and educational at the same time. My students loved this book!
Great book for any child or even adult who enjoys greek myths or even just fantasy!
