The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (DVD, 2005, Widescreen)

This film is quietly hilarious in places, disturbing in others, and just plain odd everywhere else. Enjoyable for its sheer absurdity and its protagonists' cockeyed view of events taking place around them, it's difficult not to find something to enjoy here. Some of the movie's best bits are in its absurd casting choices---Willem Dafoe, playing very much against type here, is a riot without ever really even having a funny line. And Bill Murray proves once again that he's a real actor, not just some former SNL hack riding out a career on his past fame. Not for everyone, but if you love Wes Anderson movies or are a fan of the slightly strange and understated, give this one a try.

Here is a highly stylized, unconventional comedy. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou will transport you into the surreal world created by Wes Anderson with his exquisite attention to detail and fantastic stage sets. The artificial and hallucinatory underwater world (illustrated with stop motion animation) adds a unique feel to this movie. I would go so far as to call this the best movie by Anderson, better than Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums. It is no coincidence that The Criterion Collection releases all of his films.

Steve Zissou (played by Bill Murray) is a classic character. He is not only an oceanographer, but also one of the most childish characters you will ever encounter who loves everything Team Zissou; everyone aboard must wear the red cap and Speedo, but beyond that every piece of clothing is adorned with the letter Z. One of our favorite elements in the movie are the acoustical adaptations [in Portuguese] of David Bowie songs throughout the movie. The performance by each of the characters is parallel to none, making this a timeless classic.

beautiful cinematography, quirky dry humored characters, unique plot line. these characters are crazy and somehow easy to relate to. pirates, love, illigitimate children, death, and jaguar sharks... what more could you ask for?

Great Movie, Love It, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, and the rest of the cast do a stand up job in this film

I have a rule: if I netflix a movie more than twice, it's worth buying. I netflixed The Life Aquatic twice, and figured I might as well buy it. I saw the trailers for it when it first came out and it looked really funny. I didn't get round to seeing it in the theater, so home video had to do. I loved it every bit as much as if I had seen it in the theater.

The Life Aquatic is Wes Anderson's latest film foray, and it lacks none of the humor and wit of his earlier films. There are many things to love about this movie: the colorful marine life, the beautiful soundtrack, the humor (which admittedly can be a bit of an acquired taste) and of course, the story. Bill Murray's character is the kind of guy you can love and hate. On the one hand, he was great. He was the Jacques Cousteau of the time in his heydey, but has fallen into disrepute. He is the kind of man who is great on the outside, but is only too human once you look closer. Add to this a colorful crew, an estranged wife and a possibly long-ignored son and you've got quite a mix of characters.

All the parts are played beautifully. Owen Wilson is every bit a gentleman pilot from Kentucky, Angelica Houston couldn't be a better Eleanor if she tried and Willem Dafoe gives a marvelous performance as Klaus. Let's not forget a very pompous Jeff Goldblum as Zissou's nemesis.

Bottom line: I adore this movie. The acting, the script and the cinematography combine to give a wonderful snapshot in the life of a man who had greatness, lost it and is attempting to scrape by with what little he can find. I will say that like all of Wes Anderson's films, The Life Aquatic is not for everyone. He has a certain brand of humor that some would call 'dry.' I prefer to call it 'subtle' but again, it's not for everyone.

My advice is this: if you liked Lost in Translation, Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums, you will almost certainly like The Life Aquatic. If you didn't like these films, The Life Aquatic is probably not for you.

If you approach this movie as a Drama with dry wit and subtle humor...you will really enjoy it...The story line and morals are really touching...The conclusions and lessons very deep.
You really felt for these characters quests for wisdom and closure.

The problem was that they pitched it as a straight comedy...so, people rejected it because the humor was very subtle and campy...I strongly suggest you re-vist The Life aquatic with a different mindset...you will be plesantly surprised.

I love the cinematic style of Wes Anderson films, and although initially put off by the absurdity of The Life Aquatic's plotline, fell in love with the film as a whole the second time I watched it. Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, and Angelica Houston have a chemistry that is bizarrely tight, seemless, and convincing despite the awkwardness induced by the script and cinematics of the film. The soundtrack is also an absolutely brilliant and essential complement to the work. If you are in a mood for the quirky, definitely check this one out!

The comic but ultimately touching story of a man on a quest for revenge and how along the way he matures from alpha male to father. Beautifully shot with the ship BELLAFONTE built in cross section, the camera follows characters throughout it's depths like a doll house. The soundtrack accompanying by Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO fame sets the quirky action adventure film up perfectly. A visual spectacle laced with a salty subtle humor that will win you over.

The movie was in awesome condition and i was totally pleased with the purchase and the movie is hilarious which is why i bought it!

This was my first Wes Anderson movie, and I got absolutely hooked on his work.
Besides Steven Spielberg I never quite caught a director's name, until I saw Wes' work. All his movies are absolutely great.
The latest is the Darjeeling Limited - absolutely great as well.

The subtle humor in this is great. First of all, I like everything with Bill Murray in it, and though the movie is a bit slow moving, this is part of its attraction. The story is told in almost an ethereal sense. Its super funny, even though some of the humor might not be laugh-out-loud kind of stuff. I would highly recommend it.

Wes Anderson is one of my favorite directors. His dra-comedy films are all great, I recommend you watch the others. The life aquatic is so well put together, the colors, the characters, the plot. Bill Murry played Steve Zissou like no other could, and Owen Wilson finally played a different role, and he played it very well. I recommend you buy this film.

movie starts slow, but if your a fan youll like this movie. I love the part where they rob the research lab in the middle of the ocean , its got a real fantasy like feeling

I BOUGHT THE ITEM AS A GIFT BUT MY GODSON LOVES IT! I WAS NOT SURE IF BUYING A "USED" DVD WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA OR NOT BUT HE SAYS IT WORKS GREAT FROM WHAT HE CAN TELL. THERE WERE NO VISIBLE SCRATHES AND IT APPEARS WELL TAKEN CARE OF.

This movie is very funny. It's not stupid comedy, but a little more intellectual. That being said, it's not high-brow humor either. It has an all-star cast and it's good to see Bill Murray in a newer movie. This movie is definitely worth buying, as the humor never gets old.
