Synopsis
In this monumental biography, Hannah Pakula details the extraordinary life of Soong Mei-ling, most often known as Madam Chiang Kai-shek. Chiang's peasant father came to the United States when he was only a boy, eventually graduating from Vanderbilt. He returned to China with a thoroughly westernized outlook, one which he passed down to his sons and, uniquely for the time, to his daughters, and his successful Bible-printing business allowed him to send his daughters to the United States for schooling. Chiang attended boarding school in Georgia and Wellesley College. When she married Chiang Kai-shek in 1927, she became invaluable to him for her English-language skills and savvy for negotiating Western ways. While Chiang Kai-shek proved to be less than a stellar leader, Mme. Chiang became one of the greatest foreign advocates and ambassadors China had ever seen. In 1943 she became the second woman ever to address a joint session of the U.S. Congress. Pakula's THE LAST EMPRESS gives the remarkable story of this brave, ruthless, complex, and powerful woman's life the serious study it deserves. Selected by the New York Times Book Review as a Notable Book of 2009.

Publisher's Note
With the beautiful and powerful Madame Chiang Kai-Shek at the center of one of the great dramas of the 20th century, the author of An Uncommon Woman offers the story of the founding of modern China, from the revolution that swept away the monarchy to the eventual loss to the communists and exile in Taiwan.

Industry Reviews
"Ms. Pakula writes like a dream, and her narrative is certainly a pleasure to read; anyone who wants to learn about China in the first half of the 20th century will find THE LAST EMPRESS a good guide."
(11/03/2009)

"[Pakula] views Mme. Chiang's life with interest and occasionally, when warranted, with sympathy."
(11/03/2009)

"Hannah Pakula presents Madame Chiang as far more complex, awful and brilliant than we had imagined."
(11/29/2009)

"Pakula's biography makes it clear that Madame Chiang lived one of the most extraordinary lives of the twentieth century."
