Overall a nice movie, but not enough punch at the end

This is the first movie Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock have starred in together since Speed (1994)- a movie in which they definitely had chemistry and (literally) burned up the screen. The writers of The Lake House were hoping to recreate that same chemistry between the actors and in my opinion they did... for the most part...

In this movie Bullock and Reeves share life together in a uniquely designed glass house on the lake. The only problem is they are living 2 years apart. The story starts when Kate Forster (Bullock), who is moving out of the lake house, leaves a note in the mailbox asking the new tenant to forward her mail. However, the person who receives the note is Alex Wyler (Reeves). He is not the NEW tenant, but the person who lived in the house before Kate did. Kate and Alex continue to communicate with each other through letters they each leave in the mailbox. Through the letters they realize they have a lot more in common than the space they used to live in and of course, they fall in love. The question is whether they will ever be able to meet, or if fate will continue to keep them apart.

I found this movie to be nicely done and quite romantic WHEN you don't think about the living 2 years apart/communication concept too much. When you do, a lot of things about the plot just don't make sense. I was also a bit disappointed by the ending- I was expecting more of a climax / more emotion. There is actually a scene in the middle of the movie when Alex's father dies that struck me as more emotionally charged than the ending of the movie. I was disappointed by that. I felt like I wanted to cry (yes, I like to do that sometimes...), but just couldn't. Overall a nice movie, but not enough punch at the end.

  A True Love Story!

A true love story. Dr Kate moves out of her lovely apartment on the lake in ILLINOIS and leaves a note for the new tenant that if any of her mails arrives, to please forward it. Low and behold a hunk of an Architect takes over the apartment. They are sending messages to each (sounds like you've got mail, doesn't it?) and they fall in love through these messages. But the peculiar thing is that the original message Dr Kate left was dated 2006. But it is the year 2004. Go figure - better yet, get the movie! In this movie, The Lake House, you will find great drama, action and comedy.

Beautiful Story... But Ending Lacked Something....
Review created: 06/12/07

My wife and I enjoyed this movie.

It wasn't just a 'chick flick' it had a time travel twist to it.

Someways it reminded me just a little of 'Somewhere In Time' with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve, in the 1980 movie.

However I could watch that one over and over.... this one I don't feel will stand the test of time, sorry.

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock both were very good in their roles, but the story was just a little disjointed.

And the ending... it ended kind of flat for both my wife and myself.

There were not many features in the Bonus Feature section, kind of lacking there also.

A good rental movie, not for sure what Film Library this would be bought for...

  Cute Romantic Movie
Review created: 10/24/06

There is just something cute about this movie; there are no sexual encounters or anything of the sort. The entire movie works up to that first kiss at the end. It was all romantic in a way that sexualness isn't really necessary in this movie, which was a good change. I did get a headache trying to figure it all out, who's where, how will they finally meet, what caused the time change, ect. It's the type of movie that if you are not paying attention to it every minute, you will get lost.

  The Lousy Lake House

I was so excited to see this movie when it came out and wanted to run to the theatre, unfortunately I got busy and waited until it was out on DVD..thank goodness because this movie was a bomb! I love Sandra and expected a really good love story...this movie is very difficult to follow, it is completely far-fetched beyond belief, and it never does deliver and that is if you can stay awake long enough to make it to the just as bad-ending....don't waste your money.

I decided to buy this movie because I am a romantic at heart. If there is any sort of chance of two people falling in love I am so there to help it along. So I bought this movie knowing of the romanticism in it. I was not dissapointed at all. I was actually very surprised. I am a firm believer of destiny and this movie just brings it home. It was not only romantic but also exciting. I would recommend this movie to any one who wants to have a good happy ending!

I bought it for my wife whose favorite movie is "Somewhere in Time"...I thought it would just be another boring "chick flick", but to my surprise it really is an excellent movie...There are some unexpected/interesting twists in this movie that at least twice had me saying "WoW"...

I really liked the movie. It sort of held you in suspense until the end on how it was going to turn out. It sort of leads you in one direction and suddenly shifts. Well made and very good acting. Not disappointed at all! A good chick flick!

I enjoyed the movie--I am a Sandra Bullock fan. I had seen the movie at the theater and then also purchased it. There are a few parts that just don't make sense, but I still enjoyed it. My husband did not like it--would say that it is a chick flick.

I love it because it is a bit of mystery and romance. Good acting, and a good ending. The only thing I dislike about it is that it jumps between times and if you aren't watching very closly you will miss something. It does keep you guessing. I bought it because it is worth watching over and over, and I enjoy catching the things that are missed if only watched once. It's a 'keeper' in my records!

  Awesome!

"The Lake House" was awesome! I heard a lot of bad things about it and can't imagine why. The storyline was very unique, and something that I enjoyed very much. I know people had trouble suspending belief with the time-difference aspect of the movie. But, we watch movies for an escape, they are not reality. That's what makes 'em so much fun. I absolutely love the way this movie ended. My heart was pounding my chest, and I was screaming at her to hurry up and write that last letter! And the result, mahvelous!

The Lake House w/Keanu and Sandra
Review created: 12/04/06

This was a truly moving love story. Keanu and Sandra work so well together, and they are able to pull off believable feelings in this flick. Now, for those who are looking for mysteries or an unpredictable plot, please keep moving. This is not that movie. But if you are looking for a great love story, one to make you cry out of sadness and happiness (rare in a movie, if you ask me), this is it! I had to buy it as soon as I rented it, and I zoomed to Ebay as soon as possible to do it!! A great buy!

This movie had a good story base to it, but it was very confusing and hard to figure out. First you had to figure out who was where, and how it's possible.... All around though, it was ok. 4 stars

The One Movie He Didn't Say "DUDE" in
Review created: 10/29/06
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Characters were nice. It was a nice movie IF and ONLY IF you can get past the time lapse. Now get back to modern day reality...tell me how many guys would wait for a girl for 2 years and then wait ANOTHER 2 years just to keep himself from being plowed by a truck??? Given the idea of his own mortality or living...yes, he would probably choose to live..but wait for a girl and not get any action on the side while waiting?! Not probable. The romance through letters could be just as well done with one of them in prison and the other on the outside...at least then it would make sense with the waiting, but hey...don't inmates get their freak on too??

Meh.... Nice story, but too "long". Wouldnt watch again

Nice storyline with a twist. But even though the movie wasnt longer than normal for a movie, it felt long. Its an ok movie, but i wouldnt watch it again.
Just one of many. Definately an average romance movie without much suspense, if any. Good actors, but again, not very beleiveable.
As much as I like Keanu Reeves in movies such as Matrix, this wasnt one of his better roles. Definately Average.

Don't Waste Your Popcorn Watching This Movie
Review created: 10/26/06

With two well known actors returning to the screen together (Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock were in Speed together), this movie is a disappointment. Two lovers living in separate times and writing letters that get transported to a mailbox. Just a dumb storyline that doesn't deserve a viewing.

  Creativity
Review created: 10/25/06

The movie is great because of it's creativity. The 2 main characters live at the same place, but a few years apart. The write eachother back and forth and start to become familiar with one another. This begins their 'long distance' relationship. The Lake House is a great love story from the year 2006. I'm sure you'll enjoy this movie.

  Average Movie

This movie is pretty good depending on what kind of movies you are into. It is a love story about these two people living years apart. They write and feel each other via mail. This is a nice and calm movie with very little action. If you are looking for action , you should get something else. This is a different genre as you would expect stars would film in.

A great new twist on time travel

This was a new twist on time travel and I loved it. I haven't been this caught up wondering which way will the movie end in a long time. If you want reality watch the news. If you want to escape for two hours get this movie. The acting, the story line, and the production were all great. Very entertaining.

( Likes ) The leading lady Sandra Bullock. A very intersting choice. The rest of the supporting cast. The setting for the movie is truelly wonderful. The plot line seems. A little confusing in parts. It does all flow well (dislike) The ending of the movie. Left you wondering at the end. Not that, Thats a bad thing. To walk away from a movie thinking. I give this movie (4 out of 5 stars )

lu·gu·bri·ous: adj. - Mournful, dismal, or gloomy, especially to an exaggerated or ludicrous degree, ''The Lake House.''

I like time travel films. I really do. But this film did nothing for me except annoy and fatigue me. In fact, it put me asleep seven times when I tried to see it through to the end over three different days.

I can buy the time warp premise that Kate (Sandra Bullock) and Alex (Keanu Reeves) live in the same house two years apart and develop a relationship via letters left to and from each other in the lake house's mailbox. I can buy the concept that they shared the same dog, Jack (brilliantly played by a sadly uncredited rag-a-muffin pup, perhaps the best acting of the whole film).

I wanted to like this film because I generally enjoy Bullock and Reeves. I really did want to like it. But the plodding, stilted dialogue, ever-brooding facial expressions, limpid body language, aching sorrow, mostly ponderous musical score, and lack of chemistry between Kate and Alex put me off. Way off.

High hopes for this movie but was let down
Review created: 10/03/06(updated 10/03/06)
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I was so excited to see this movie. I bought it even before watching it, but should have waited to watch it first.

This movie is about a man and a woman who meet through letters, but the problem is that they discover they are living 2 years apart, but recieving mail from the same mail box at a glass lake house. It was a little difficult to follow and unrealistic. But, more importantly than that, it was so slow and documented much of what they said in their letters together, and not hardly anything after they actually meet. It was very disappointing for me, and it didn't have the chemistry that I was hoping for between Sandra and Keanu. But, then again, it's hard to get chemistry, when the movie doesn't ever really dipict them being together.

It was overall a let-down for me and just seemed like a darker and depressing movie than what I was hoping for.

Anyone want to buy my movie? I'm looking to get rid of it.

This is an excellant movie, very creative and keeps you engrossed. You have to watch it carefully and even a couple times but it is worth it. Watched it twice and got more out of it the second time, highly recommend it. I bought it because I had seen it at the movie theater and loved it. Wanted my own copy of it.
