Amir is the son of a wealthy man; his best friend is Hassan, the son of his father's servant. Growing up in Kabul, the two share an idyllic childhood until a traumatic event--and Amir's act of cowardly betrayal--changes the nature of their friendship. Amir, who ends up in America, is tortured by his betrayal of Hassan, and he finds himself compelled to return, years later, to a Taliban-dominated Afghanistan to make amends. THE KITE RUNNER, written by an Afghani--now a physician--whose family found asylum in the U.S. in 1980--personalizes the conflicts in Afghanistan and the US involvement there. A debut novel, it was hailed by critics for its poetic prose and vivid characters.
Publisher's Note Traces the unlikely friendship of Amir, a wealthy Afghanistani youth, and a servant's son, in a tale that spans the final days of the nation's monarchy through the atrocities of the present day. Even after reading it earlier in the year the story still resonates with me. Observe the relationship, or lack thereof, between a father and son and how the son must struggle with youth and becoming a man. You will thoroughly enjoy this one. It was in great shape and it was at a great price. He read the book and loved it. Review ID: 10000000008313962 Was this review helpful? The Kite Runner is a great story about friendship and love but it has tons of action packed into the pages. I would definitely recommend everyone to read this book. Khaled Hosseini is a wonderful author who really develops the story and his characters in such a way that you feel like you know them and you're there, watching the story unfold. It's a wonderful book, as is A Thousand Splendid Suns, also by this author. Review ID: 10000000008213042 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 08/04/08 by: This story is an excellent read with a strong moral thread. I bought this book because it was required summer reading for my daughters, however, I believe the sexual content was too strong for 14-15 year olds who have not yet started their sophmore year in high school. Teachers: please save this assignment for the upperclassmen. Review ID: 10000000008187444 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
