This is a true to life story about Jeffrey Wigand who worked for a major tobacco company. A scientist, he was fired for the various companies withholding critical information to the hazards of Tobacco. He was to be interviewed on sixty minutes, however it was pulled and the TV station and the Tobacco companies were filing suit.

I couldn't find the movie anywhere, but was pleased to find a new DVD of the movie here.
I saw portions of the movie on tv and like what I saw. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the movie to watch it in it's entirety, until I found it on ebay. I like a movie based on a true story, and this was amongst the best.

  The Insider

For every one story that surfaces there are 50 more which are untold. This movie does a good job, but not a GREAT job illustrating the different types of harassment and coercion that has gone on with different work related issues and bringing them into the light. Pollution, Hazardous Chemicals, Dangerous Workplace Environments, etc. etc. Just think, the general public has known of a link between cancer and tobacco at least as long as I've been alive. Knowledge of the ills of tobacco has been purported for centuries. How many others have been intimidated, hazed, and abused for knowing/telling a universal truth or just bearing witness to a crime or an injustice?

Story is a little slow at times. I bought it to use in a Business Ethics class that I was teaching and the students enjoyed the movie.

This is a great movie. I decided to purchase this movie because I already have it on VHS. I am a huge Al Pacino fan and have his entire collection on VHS. I am quickly trying to replace the VHS collection with a DVD collection.

Nice Movie. A bit long, but well acted

I liked the acting performance by Russell Crowe and Al Pacino. Very entertaining! The movie uncovers the seedy side of the cigarette industry and how they fought to keep their trade secrets of addicting society to nicotine away from public viewing. This movie shows the courage of one man and how he lost his family in the process. Being a whistleblower often means losing your friends, your career, and your family may suffer to the point of no return. You feel for the character of Crowe and see how CBS was embroiled in an internal battle over doing the right thing or doing the safe thing.

  Big Tobacco Hated this Movie
Review created: 08/13/07

One of the most important movies to come along. Dr. Wigand was fired for attempting to get his employer to leave out a carcinogenic addition to cigarettes that make them more flavorful. His confidentiality agreement was enlarged after the firing to prevent his talking to the press. Threats on his and his family's lives were made, yet he bravely spoke out calling cigarettes a "delivery device for nicotine". A producer for "60 Minutes" hired him to consult on documents from another of the tobacco companies and began to sense there was another story this man might provide. Wigand's employer threatened suit and the corporate side of the broadcasting company backed away from airing the segment. This is a well made movie worth more than one viewing.
