THE HITS/THE B-SIDES contains 56 tracks on 3 CDs spanning Prince's 15-years as a performer. It also includes a 22-page booklet with photographs by Herb Ritts, plus extensive liner notes and track annotations about previously unreleased material, live recordings and B-sides. The prospect of collecting all the hits and B-sides by one of the most talented, prolific, and successful pop stars of the '80s and '90s onto a mere three discs seems laughable at first. Nevertheless, this stupendous, well-sequenced set provides a thoroughly representative overview of his Prince-ness's oeuvre and a genuine sense of the range and impact of his brilliance. The number of great songs on the 56-item track list boggles the mind. From his early synth-pop ("Dirty Mind," "Controversy"), through the golden middle-period of the Revolution ("1999," "Little Red Corvette," "When Doves Cry," "Raspberry Beret," "Kiss," "U Got The Look"), and on to such New Power Generation hits as "Gett Off" and "Sexy M.F.," Prince's innovative, accessible, and utterly singular musical vision is undeniable. The box is made doubly indispensable by the inclusion of previously unreleased material, live recordings, and B-sides (which fill the third disc). Unsurprisingly, much of this material finds Prince at his experimental best. Many of these songs-"Pink Cashmere," "200 Balloons," "Erotic City," and his version of his own "Nothing Compares 2 U" (made enormously popular by Sinead O'Connor)-should have been hit singles in their own right. This set is an absolute necessity for fans, newcomers, and everyone else. Reviews Review created: 08/18/08 by: I originally had a 2-disc set of Prince's best; sadly (due to my own stupidity) I loaned it out, and it was never returned. That was about 6-years ago, and I've been looking to replace it ever-since. I was soooo-happy to find it on ebay (from bargainbinscd at an extremely-reasonable price), along with an extra B-sides disc. This 3-disc anthology is a must-have for any Prince fan. I even discovered an unheard-gem on the B-sides disc, entitled "Feel U Up", that is a total hook! Having come-of-age with Prince's music in the '80's, this set was a welcome-find. I've always felt that Prince's music represented the best of dance-music in it's day. His musical-influences include the late, great, James Brown; and there are many of today's artists (both in rap and R&B), that use samples of Prince and JB in their music. Jazz, mixed with R&B, rap, blues, rock, and electronica/dance; not to mention some killer-symphonic ballads (like the over 8-minute "Purple Rain"), make this artist a hall-of-famer. His vocal stylings and range, not-to-mention his electric-guitar-work, elevates this 50-year-old pop-star into icon status. Call him Prince, or "a symbol, formerly known-as"; his music has spanned close to 30 memorable-years. The only two ommisions from this set that I really wish were at least on the B-side: are "Hot-Thing" and "Anastasia". I guess you can't have everything, but this set comes very close. I'm satisfied with my purchase, as I'm sure anyone who has ever enjoyed his music will be if they buy this set. Review ID: 10000000008390086 Was this review helpful? I've been collecting his music since then and was excited when I got this cd. There wasn't anything about this cd that could be disliked. I'm glad that I got it when I did.
