Upon their release in 1993, the shorthand descriptors were that THE HITS ONE contained the "clean" songs while THE HITS TWO had all the "dirty" stuff. It's not quite so simple. Even Prince's most chaste material, like the finger-wagging "Pop Life," has a certain limpid eroticism. "Soft and Wet" and the power-poppy "When You Were Mine," while nowhere near as blatant as some of The Purple One's other tracks, still raise an eyebrow. What's most interesting is the way the best songs from uneven albums like GRAFFITI BRIDGE and otherwise obscure tracks like the jazzy "Seven" assume a new luster in the company of classics like "When Doves Cry." THE HITS ONE contains the previously unreleased "Pink Cashmere" and a live version of "Nothing Compares 2 U." This disc and its companion volume are also available as a box set with an essential bonus third disc of b-sides.

Entertainment Weekly - Steve Daly (03/26/1991)

5 Stars - Indispensible - ...this is no ordinary best of....it's not just the high and mighty width of [Prince's] collection that startles: the sustained quality here is remarkable...

The CD was originally released in 1993 as part of a box set. The Hits 1 featured more of his hit singles and radio friendly songs. The highlights of the CD are his well known songs such as: When Doves Cry, 1999, Let's Go Crazy and 7. The rest of the CD features much of his obscure songs but reconizable ones such as I Feel For You and the original Nothing Compares 2 U. However, some songs on here are quite stale and dry. If you're a Prince fan and really want the Prince songs you know and love like Little Red Corvette, Kiss, etc.., you'll find that on the Hits 2. The CD lacks the comprehensive songs that you want to hear. It's worth it though, if you are a die hard Prince fan.

This wasnt one of my favorites--seems to me they put a lot of songs on the cd that I dont remember ever being hits. I would have passed on this one.
