Twenty-something couple Grace (a mini-skirted Sophia Bush from ONE TREE HILL) and Jim (Zachary Knighton) embark on a road trip across the American Southwest to meet up with Grace's friends on vacation. Things get off to a bad start when they almost run over a hitchhiker in the middle of a rainstorm, and then leave him to fend for himself. When they later run into the man who calls himself John Ryder (Bean), at a gas station, their consciences get the best of them, and they agree to give him a ride to the next town. The couple's passenger quickly turns on his hosts, and although they manage to escape, he follows them and makes their lives a living hell. Soon, Grace and Jim find themselves framed for John Ryder's vicious crimes, and they are on the run from both the authorities and the Hitcher, of whose existence no one but they are aware. As their flight gets increasingly desperate and the Hitcher's methods of torture more brutal, Grace and Jim struggle desperately to discern what the man wants, and why he has chosen them. The film benefits from its beautiful, desolate desert setting, as it highlights the solitude and desperation of the couple's situation. Despite a few problems of plausibility and the frequent foolishness of the protagonists--of which horror fans are well-accustomed--THE HITCHER delivers fright in all the right places, as well as beautiful women and plenty of gore.

Reviews I thought that The Hitcher was a very good from the standpoint that not only did it contain the suspense/thrill aspects needed, it also was very realistic. Not many of us will stop for a hitchhiker, especially on a desert road late at night. So when the main characters drove pass this guy, I can see how later when they finally meet he is pissed. The twist from there is cool and its a crazy ride until the end. I wouldn't quite call this a 'must buy' but a good watch since its on cable now. Review ID: 10000000008731384 Was this review helpful? Report this review As far as hitchhiker movies go, this was entertaining. If you like spotting all the mistakes the characters make, this movie has its share. A more realistic screen write would have made this a better film. Review ID: 10000000007724612 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 04/09/08 by: You never know just why the Hitcher does what he does.. you're a smart kid, figure it out. You don't know where this cold blooded killer came from, or where he is going.. but you know that when you're in his sights you will never be safe until you're dead. Did you do something wrong? Are you a zealot, a rich brat, holier than thou? Did you do something to get this guy angry? Doesn't matter, cause if he has his way- you'll be just like him. Great movie, BETTER than the original. Fantastic deleted scenes, loved the behind the scenes shorts that really gave some insight on how good movies are really made. Sean Bean is excellent, taking over Rutger Hauer's original character perfectly. He really has a way of making you gulp over the smallest, innocent gesture- because you know its not small, its everything with the Hitcher. Sophia Bush is okay, the cute girlfriend that steals the show from her whiney boyfriend. Zachary Knighton is forgettable, though whiney just like C. Thomas Howell from the original made him. Neal McDonough is fantastic as the one cop who wants to believe the kids, and knows there is more than meets the eye to this story- he seems to be the only one. Mr. McDonough was just surprisingly excellent. This the movie to see before any cross country trip! Review ID: 10000000006627880 Was this review helpful? Report this review Hadn't seen the movie. Somewhat predictable. Lots of action and suspense. A bit nerve wracking when the guy keeps *showing up* out of the blue. Pretty good thriller. Review ID: 10000000006291329 Was this review helpful?
