  A Disappointment

I purchased this book because I actually wanted to read the text of the Gospel of Mary Magdalene. Unfortunately, very little of the text is available in this review.

The author is clearly dijointed in thought, and does not elaborate the gnosis which has become associated with Mary Magadalene, and neither does he thoroughly explain the sous.

While I was disappointed in what I have purchased, and felt it was misrepresented in title, I did find it a good read. Enjoyable. And would recommend it for study of the work mentioned.

While some fundalmentalist Christians will automatically dismiss any Codex found in Nag Hammadi, they have in every way been found to be authentic. As Christianity developed, there were many different sects, all persecuted by the Romans. After Constantine conqured Rome, and declared Christianity the official religion, the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were soon connonized into the Bible as we know it today. There would be only one Christianity. The Gnostic Gospels of Thomas, Mary Magdalene, Phillip, Judas, and The Gospel of Truth were dismissed and sought out for destruction. Why? They in no way take away from the cannonized Gospels. If anything, they enhance them. I found the Gospel of Mary Magdalene to be absouletely spellbinding! Every page begins with, "The master said..." In this Gospel, Christ reveals the true nature of sin, his relationship to Mary Magdalene, and what must be done for us to advance on the path of enlightenment and salvation.

This material is astounding, worth so much for all A++!

Modern Christianity is often controlled heavily by the traditionalists. There is no harm in reading all that is available from the time of Jesus Christ. This writing strengthens one who wishes to understand the times and circumstances of Jesus and his life. Mary or Miriam of Magdelene was a very powerful person in the Bible today, the first to see the Lord after his death. Of course, this is too scarey to consider for some people, but to me and I hope more people, this is amazing and wonderful to read, and inspirational to read! Well done and well put together.

  Important Book for Christians
Review created: 02/04/08

This is an excellent translation and commentary by Jean-Yves Leloup. For those who can read Coptic, the translation is printed back to back with the original Coptic script. Leloup's commentary can only be described as enlightened. He takes each sentence and paragraph and opens it up, bringing richness and meaning to things I might have overlooked. He uses many references to the Canonical texts (our "standard" Bible), to placate critics who denounce gnostic texts as wrong-headed mysticism or somehow un-Christian. Anyone would benifit greatly to see what Christianity was like before it was absorbed by the Roman empire. I highly recommend it.
