| Movie Description With THE GOOD SHEPHERD, Robert De Niro (A BRONX TALE) makes an ambitious return to the director's chair. A labor of love for Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth (FORREST GUMP), the film tells an epic, fictionalized account of how the Central Intelligence Agency was born. Matt Damon plays Edward Wilson, a reserved young man who graduated from Yale in the late 1930s. His membership in the exclusive, hidden Skull and Bones society led him away from poetry and into a relationship with the federal government, who recruited him to help them on several covert operations. Roth's script alternates between Wilson's gradual emergence as a genuine government operative in the early 1940s and the infamous Bay of Pigs conflict in the early 1960s. Along the way, he has a sweet romance with a pretty deaf girl (a sparkling Tammy Blanchard) and ends up marrying the woman he impregnates (Angelina Jolie) out of a strong sense of duty. Throughout the film, the emergence of a mysterious tape haunts Wilson, who is determined to uncover the truth behind a leak in his secret organization. Production designer Jeannine Claudia Oppewall (L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN) and costume designer Ann Roth (THE ENGLISH PATIENT, THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY) faithfully recreate these earlier periods in American history, while the imagery of Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson (J.F.K., THE AVIATOR) casts a warm, stately glow upon De Niro's assembled cast of luminaries (including Alec Baldwin, Michael Gambon, William Hurt, Billy Crudup, and Joe Pesci). The result is a production that recalls Francis Ford Coppola's THE CONVERSATION and Steven Spielberg's MUNICH.

Top Reviews  A Looooooooong Movie....Review created: 06/03/07 by:  5 of 5 people found this review helpful. .... but a good story once you got past the fact that it is hard to get invested in Matt Damon's character.... he is just too quiet and wooden to have feelings for during this movie. Angelina Jolie just didn't have enough screen time to make her character better. The Skull & Bones, the OSS, the CIA, this coulda been a contender.... instead it is just a loooooong movie. He lives by the code of being a good American is what matters first and foremost. The Yale Skull and Bones organization and its standard is only part of what made him who he is. His father committed suicide beacuse he was weak. He lives his life being strong. I found that you must pay close attention in order to fully understand the movie. It is 2 hours and 40 minutes, a bit drawn out. But the climactic revelation of the trader was worth watching this for. I found the acting to be very good, but Matt Damon was too young looking to have a son older than 10. He needed some better aging characteristics. Still, this is a very good movie. The Good Shepherd I enjoyed this movie but it was a little too slow moving and there jsut wasn't enough action or suspense. The cast is great and all give incredible performances there just wasn't enough to keep me too interested... and did I mention this movie is 3 years long.
