This Long Beach, CA rapper is a cohort of Snoop Dogg, and even a cursory listen to THE GENERAL'S LIST makes is plain that his approach to hip-hop is very much in line with Snoop's style. The classic G-Funk sound jumps out of every track here, that laid-back groove insinuating itself into one's bones. And like Snoop Dogg, Tray Dee manages the difficult feat of presenting a hardened character comfortable with violence, crime, and misogyny while somehow managing to maintain a light-hearted, even likable tone. The secret may be in the delivery, which achieves just the right balance between cold-eyed commitment and bleary-eyed stoner slack. Political correctness is thrown out the door right off the bat, so you just have to go with the flow when Tray Dee lays down his West Coast vibe.
