review of the final cut + 1

This is one of those great records that, after 25 years or so , began to wear a little thin. The clicks and pops were distracting (i realized this one day not too long ago, upon listening to a stack of old records). To make along story short, I loved the price, the quality and the bonus track. Oh and also the time in which it arrived. However, once again, the plastic case was cracked and broken. I wish that these sellers would put a little more effort into the shipping preparation aspect of the transaction. But all in all, 1 and 3/4 thumbs up.

  Overlooked and Underrated Classic
Review created: 06/23/08

Pink Floyd is much like any other Progressive Rock group out there: You either love them or you hate them. There's no middle ground. Be it groups like Rush, Yes, Police, King Crimson, each group has its staunch fanbase and no middle-of-the-road fans. This is the last Pink Floyd album to feature Roger Waters in the usual cadre, and you find no shortage of his conceptual influence here: Drawn off some elements of the previous album "The Wall", "The Final Cut" looks at the past, present and future unique elements of war, but goes as far as to illustrate the common thread linking all wars: Power, greed, territoriality, the illusion of glory, the reality of mortality and the eventual futility of it all. If you're used to Waters' lyrics style, you can expect his usual witticisms, which are subtle-yet-piercing and, as always, timed with his trademark precision.

David Gilmour's vocals are largely (If not totally) absent here; It seems the entire album is Waters. Not a good or bad thing, but when one considers the following album "Momentary Lapse Of Reason" and Waters' absence there, some wonder whether this played any part at all in the schism of Waters and Gilmour/Mason. Reason nonwithstanding, the album weathered on to become a classic in its own right with Floydians everywhere. If one is looking for radio staples, you won't find them here; If you're into Floyd, you know how to appreciate Floyd for its own merit, and not for that of the tragically moronic "apply, lather, rinse, repeat" world of Pop Music. Highly recommended.

  Pink Floyd The Final Cut

I dont know why this album does not get much air time, but this is an excellent album by Pink Floyd. It was produced during a time of much turmiol between Roger Waters & David Gilmour. It was, for all intensive purposes, the final cut. This is not an album to brighten your day. It is incredibly depressing to listen to, but the song wrighting is a master piece through out the entire album. I also don't know why Richard Wright was not part of this album, but as Pink Floyd continued their music careers without Roger Waters, Richard rejoined the group to record the follow up album. I bought this album (CD) as it was one of the missing CD's in my Floyd collection. You can almost say this is a Roger Waters album. I believe the other band members were part of it only to fulfill the record contract. There seems to be very little input from other band members. Roger wrote & produced the album . David Gilmour sings only one song (Not Now John) on the entire album. If your a Floyd fan, I highly recommend this CD. If you have any suicidal tendacies, don't buy it. It may take you over the edge.

This is a depressing album but it is very well written. The mood and tempo change is great. Lyrically a very deep and well written album. This album is recorded very good, if you have a high end stereo system it will suck you in. This album is recorded better than any other Floyd album besides maybe Dark Side. Don't just listen once give this album a chance, and definatly read the lyrics while you listen.

Everything about this album I enjoy. Had the casette version and lost it.
The only dislike is the album isn't long enough.
Lots of good quality creative art work here.
Very enjoyable album.

  A must for any collector

This was the album that sealed the fate of Waters-era-Floyd. Roger Waters composed and performed the entire album with the rest of the band acting as backup...something in my opinion, he would have preferred all along. Animosities and bickering between him and Gilmore...and Rogers' own personal demons all come out in this introspective and darkest of all Floyd pieces. In fact, we only hear Gilmore on one song on the entire album.

Quiet, dark, emotionally and philosophical. This should have been a Roger Waters album instead of the last album they would perform as the original core group. I like this album because I always enjoyed the quiet songs from The Wall, but it's an album I can only pull out every now and then because it's SO quiet that it's almost a funeral piece...and I guess in many ways, it was. Rogers left Floyd and it became Gilmore's band...which was still amazingly great...but needed Rogers to balance it with his pain and anger, which is evident in everything he writes.

I recommend this album for hardcore Pink Floyd fans who want to complete their collection...newbies might want to sample it first and then decide if they really like it or not.
