A book that opens up real life economics

effrey Sachs's The End of Poverty showcase his humble yet worldly-wise knowledge of not just economics, but a dozen ways for us to awaken and see the world around see. His personal tales of travel to far-out and "unseen" locations mixing with policy-only chatter to convince politicians to embrace economics that will finally save their nation. Putting fiercely harsh politicians to realise their lifelong quest is really to contribute back to their own society.

His humble way of writing astonishes myself tremendously. His writings provide enough detail about historical facts - to let the reader see where we could go further for this world with regards to the Millennium Development Goals.

Each detailed segment of the book itself is a timeline of where he start. He even humbly says that he knew so little about economics until he saw the situation with his own eyes.

When he came to the topic of India, and China, he acknowledges how these countries had faltered (from own fault and others) and how they could rightfully be in a stewardship for the global community.

He bravely lambasted US controlled institutions like IMF and the World Bank, while still fairly writing facts and how all institutions could work better to accomplish more for everyone.

Reading this book will surely awaken your hearts. You will feel really more patriotic not nation wise but much more significantly - to the one - to the Earth.

Each person could read this book and then start their own. Not just another book that you read and "know" then move on to another book.

A politician, a doctor, a carpenter, student - you could be anybody and be awed by this and not feel ashamed to start thinking as one single world.

  Terrific read
Review created: 10/02/09

Loved the sympathy that Sachs incorporates into the factual topic that is economics. He begins by giving you a taste of real stories, you feel compassion for the people living in poverty, even though you don't know them, you feel their pain.

  Important book

If you do know who is Jeffrey Sachs and what role he played in the developing economics, you will buy it without any thoughts. This book lets readers travel around the world and see how the globalization was done...
The book is well-written, very interesting, and full of facts.

However, it will be also good to buy a book called "Globalization and its discontents" by Jeffrey Stiglitz.
Jeffrey Sachs preaches "shock-therapy" and for a good reason. However there are multiple cases when shock-therapy didn't work (ex. Russia). Jeffrey Stiglitz explains multiple reasons why it didn't work, and why gradualism sometimes is better.
I would encourage to buy them together.
