Now this Is A Great How To Book

This book is a must have for anyone interested in photography, from the amateur just starting out to the well seasoned professional. The lay out is awesome, the author makes it seems like he is right there next to you giving you advise to yout questions that you ask. I have read and reread this book several times and always learn something new each time. In fact, I have friends that have looked through the book, and went out and bought it the next day, it is that good. So if you enjoy photography then you need to get this book.

The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby (2006)

This is an excellent book for a beginner (like me). Lots of information is presented in a simple and fun way, and I learned an awful lot from it. It's a quick read, and I didn't have to suffer through page after page of technical jargon that I didn't understand. By the time I finished the book (about 3 days), I felt I knew my camera and many photography basics well enough to confidently go out and start taking pictures. I highly recommend this book for anyone who's wanting to remove the mysterious aura from digital photgraphy.

My only complaint is that the book wasn't long enough. I wish it could have covered much, much more than it did.

Great information and easy to understand. Also, rather humorous. Glad I bought it and am looking forward to buying more books by Scott Kelby.

Digital Photography for weekend warriors and more!

I have really enjoyed this book. As a busy mom, this is just the kind of format I need to get great tips between feeding and chasing after a kid. And my photos are better to prove it.
This is a very accessible book to those who want to skip all the "theory" and get down to taking better pictures. I'd say it's for beginners who want to get a little more serious.
Excellent gear recommendations at different price levels--even really cheap but great solutions to big problems.
It's kind of random that he jumps from pretty much the basics in the first chapter to wedding photography in the third chapter, but, hey, they're all great tips.
I really enjoy his writing style--and corny humor--and will definitely buy another one of his books (either for Photoshop or the second volume for digital photography).
I would say this book is a "must have" in every budding photographer's collection.

Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby - Great Intro!
Review created: 03/26/08

At a professional photographer's recommendation, I purchased The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby, Vol. 2. It was such an incredibly excellent book for someone wanting to learn professional photography methods in an easy to understand and apply format that I immediately wanted the prequel-Vol. 1.

Both are excellent books, and I rate them much better than the comparable Idiot's guide to digital photography, Digital Photo. for dummies, and so on.

This book does not spend any time telling you the technicalities or details, it simply tells you what button to push, and what technique to employ to achieve what you want in a photo. No memorizing numbers or triangles. He does recommend some equipment, which I appreciated, in photography some things are you get what you pay for, and some accessories are almost necessities.

  Another Kelby Gem
Review created: 02/21/08(updated 02/21/08)

I confess - I am a Kelby junkie. I like Scott Kelby's books, even his lame (and he admits to it) humor. I own several of his books, because I like his concise, cut-to-the-chase style. The reader doesn't have to wade through all sorts of extraneous text in order to complete an exercise. In The Photoshop CS2 Book, I learned a great deal in a short time by following his clear, to-the-point instructions.

It's the same with his Digital Photography book. Its short chapters are easy to read, and packed with information that will be easy to remember. He covers equipment, accessories, shooting technique, camera settings, and some specific chapters on how to duplicate professional looking shots.

He does focus quite a bit on portrait and wedding photography, but you can pick and choose which subjects interest you. Like all his books, it's easy reading, and a compact size that easily goes with you should you want to refer to it.

It's a no-nonsense, good reference book to have on your shelf.

The book was required by a photojournalism class but has been instrumental in helping me figure out the hows and whys of my digital camera. Mr. Kelby's sense of humor makes the book a good read as well as a great reference manual!

Simple and easy to follow tricks
Review created: 08/08/09

Scott Kelby gives all the tricks that are practical and in an easy to understand way. What nice about the way he wrote this book was that he kept it simple, one trick a page, which makes it simple for readers to memorize them. I like this book and am already using the tricks getting a lot better pictures instantly after reading the tricks. I also bought his Vol. 2 and Photoshop CS3 books, which both look great, too.

  This book covers it all!!
Review created: 06/06/09

Long ago I had taken photography in college and wanted to get back into the hobby. I purchased the book as a refresher course and I was surprised at how much I had forgotten! It essentially recapped a semester of photography and was exactly as I had remembered it to be. If your are new to the hobby this is the book for you. It covers it all in a simple to understand and easy to execute format. Kelby keeps the book going by being funny and educational at the same time. A very good choice.

  Good Tips and Information
Review created: 05/31/09
by:

I am not finished reading the book, but so far I believe it to have some good tips and idea's for improving your photography skills. It also give's you the tips in a way that is easy to understand, with the author's sense of humor throughout the whole book. An ok book, that might help you take short cuts, but won't teach you in depth about photography

  Great Reference Guide
Review created: 05/06/09

Kelby gives the reader (amateur to professional photographer) tips on how to take great shots. He doesn't waste time using technical lingo, but puts it in an easy to read format that is entertaining at the same time. Highly recommended.

  Scott Kelby's book
Review created: 03/29/09
by:

I really liked The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby. He writes in such a way as to keep you interested, and he lays out the instructions so even a beginner has no trouble following him. I had read reviews about his books and decided to try this one. I will most likely buy his second book on digital photography after finishing this one. The man writes as if he were standing next to you giving you instructions.

  The "cookbook" for photography
Review created: 01/05/09

I absolutely love this book. I am a new owner of a DSLR and have been very intimidated by the thing. This book is easy to read. Somewhat funny and very informative!! It even show example pictures and gives the "recipe" for aquiring the same effects! What else can a newbie ask for if the teacher is not right there while taking pictures?

Best How-to photography book I own
Review created: 12/21/08
by:

I am fairly new to photography and have purchased several books on the subject and this is, hands down, the most informative book I own. Scott Kelby has a writing style (along with a great sense of humor!) that makes this a great how-to book. He dosen't overwell you with a lot of technical jargon but cuts right to the chase and just tells you what you need to do to get the great shots. I see several Scott Kelby books in my future!

  Digital Photography and Scott Kelby

OK, you consider yourself an "advanced beginner"... in other words you already know what apeture, shutter speed, white balance, and terms such as these mean, and let's say you have a camera that will allow you to adjust these functions. So you know that you can already shoot pictures better than the average person but you want to take it up a notch... then this is a FANTASTIC book. It is simple to understand but it can take your photography skills to another level. Now, when I show others a photograph I have taken I'm more likely to get a "WOW... YOU TOOK THAT PICTURE?" This book tells you simple steps and simple ideas that will give you the confidence that you can take a photograph that will stand out in an average crowd. P.S. Photoshop helps a lot also and I am just starting to get a feel for how to use this massive software. My Photoshop book by Scott Kelby is almost 500 pages and it's much, much more time consuming... but it can do some amazing things. One last thought, I'm still getting my prints "developed" by someone else because I don't have the money or time I feel that it takes to do my new photographs justice. Maybe someday. Thanks for reading and have a great day.

  Great Beginning Now Want More
Review created: 02/01/08

Excellent book very well presented. I am a 40 year experianced still photographer. I resisted the "digital revolution. this book helped me get over the resistance. It is a good "how to" on photography book.
I just wish it had EVEN more dealing with things specifically digital.

I hope the author will more fully explore in depth in a futher book things are brought up in passing Some of these are the full use of the software Lighroom and organizing your digitial files for better processing & retrival.

The investement in the non digital was enormous. It would be nice to intergrate some of it into the digital world. I hope a future " DIGITAL" book will touch on ways of intergrating some of one's older (specifically Nikon) lenses and flashes (SB 26 series or the Q flash) used with the f4 & f5 with the digital cameras like the D200.
