Scorsese filched the basic storyline from Wai Keung Lau and Siu Fai Mak's masterful 2002 Hong Kong action film, INFERNAL AFFAIRS, which saw a policeman going undercover as a mob member and a mob member infiltrating the police force. Scorsese transfers the action to Boston, positioning Leonardo Di Caprio as undercover cop William Costigan and Matt Damon as undercover mobster Colin Sullivan. While Costigan and Sullivan get into plenty of nail-biting situations that almost reveal their true identities, Scorsese gradually unravels his strong supporting cast, including Jack Nicholson as Sullivan's mob boss, Frank Costello; Ray Winstone as Costello's meat-headed muscle; Mark Wahlberg as a hot-headed police sergeant; and Vera Farmiga as a love interest for both Damon and DiCaprio's characters. THE DEPARTED finds Scorsese generously dipping his toes back into waters that will be warmly familiar to his biggest fans. Rolling Stones songs pepper the soundtrack, recalling the remarkable "Jumpin' Jack Flash" sequence in MEAN STREETS; bullets and blood punctuate every key scene, bringing TAXI DRIVER's explosive finale to mind; and the mobster-themed storyline is a thrilling return to GOODFELLAS territory. Nicholson and Winstone provide acting master-classes every time they appear, neatly complementing the blossoming talents of DiCaprio, Damon, and Wahlberg, while further veteran support comes in small roles for Martin Sheen and Alec Baldwin. Scorsese is often criticized for affording precious little screen time to female characters, and THE DEPARTED won't quell those dissenting voices, although Farmiga's character proves to be more than a match for DiCaprio and Damon's posturings. But Scorsese followers who balked at his diversions into documentary filmmaking (NO DIRECTION HOME) and period epics (THE AVIATOR) will be delighted to find raw male machismo puncturing the screen once again in this frenetic entry into his celebrated oeuvre.

The Departed I know it's only February but The Departed gets 6 thumbs up from me and gets my vote for Movie of the Year. Great cast, amazing script, twists, turns, action, excitement. This movie is perfect in every way. It's an edge of your seat thrill-ride from beginning to end. DiCaprio, Damon, Nicholson, Wahlberg, Baldwin, and so on and so forth. The cast is so spectacular this movie just had no possibility of being bad. Martin Scorcese will win awards this year. That's a guarantee! A final note though... this movie is rated 18A for a reason, it's got plenty of violence and extremely harsh language. It's definitely not recommended for anybody under the age of 16. Final Verdict: 5/5 Worth buying?: Absolutely, The Departed is a must own. IF YOU FIND THIS REVIEW HELPFUL PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE. Thank you. Review ID: 10000000002997582 Was this review helpful? This film really keeps you interested all the way though as you want to know what will happen to the protagonists, and how they will or won't get caught. We have all seen All-Star cast films where they just did not gel, but Marty seems to have got a good performance out of everybody. You can tell that Jack Nicholson has been given huge leeway in how he wanted to take his character through the story, and as always seems larger than life, but do not mistake that for a recycled performance. Without giving nothing away, his meeting with Matt Damon in the cinema is certainly worth watching for novelty and imagination in introducing yourself to someone you know!!! This is the sort of film you come out of the theatre with a big smile on your face, and surrounded by good spirited chattering. There are twists but you do not lose track of events, and just lap up the quality that laces the film from beginning to end. Sure it is not Goodfellas, but then they say that genius only touches you once....but this is head and shoulders above the best that most other directors can make. It was an original story and the actors were recognizable. I usually find that the originals are always better. However, Scorcese has tweaked the story a little and casting with Academy Award-winning actors has made this much better than the original. DiCaprio pulls off the tough guy character well thanks to his personal trainer. At first, I thought he wouldn't fit, but I was wrong. Overall, great storyline, acting, cinematography, and better ending. Review ID: 10000000003300801 Was this review helpful? This is the story of 2 Police Officers, one who is a mole for the cops in the Irish Mob and the other is a mole in the police department for the mob. Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) is the head of the Irish Mob Family who raises a boy like his own son, and sends him to the police academy to become a cop. Officer Collin Sullivan (Matt Damon) helps out his adopted father by passing on police information to him. Officer Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) infiltrates Costello's crew and passes on information to his superiors (Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen). This is called Martin Scorsese's best film since Goodfellas, but I would have to say that Goodfellas was better. There is alot of good action, and there is a good twist at the end. Overall it is a real good film. Definitely one to see for any gangster movie fan. Get the Widescreen Edition DVD on eBay today and check it out for yourself !! After stepping out of the theaters I was still talking about it, after driving home I was still talking about it, after eating some dinner I was still talking about it. This movie was great. Scorsese really pulled another one off. Very violent.. and I love it. Review ID: 10000000002966145 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
