In The Da Vinci Code, art historian and religious symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to the Louvre to help in investigating the murder of its curator. The dead man left a series of cryptic clues and symbols near his body before he died. With the help of cryptologist Sophie Neveu, Langdon discovers that some of the clues are hidden in Da Vinci's famous painting, "The Vitruvian Man." He also learns that Da Vinci, along with Isaac Newton, Victor Hugo, and Botticelli, belonged to a secret society called the Priory of Sion. Also involved are other religious groups and secret societies who are out to stop Langdon and Neveu at any cost. This thriller's breakneck pace, ingenious clues and escapes, and sharp intelligence have already sent it to the top of bestseller lists. The New York Times review of this book is summed up in one word, "Wow." We couldn't agree more. The Da Vinci Code is a fun and intelligent read.
I never really read any novels of this subject or matter before, ususally just romance and comedy... but this one really caught my attention. i read to book and then saw the movie afterwards and im glad i did because im not one for watching the movie and actually having the curiosity to read it all over again! but this was worth it..it was SO much better than the movie. the movie was actually disappointing to me and i noticed it left out a few things. this novel is GREAT and i wanted to keep reading till the end!! it took me a few chapters to get into..but i think it was just because i wasnt really educated on the da vinci code..now i love it! awesome, thrilling and a great read!
Oh my God, I couldnt put it down! Finished it in 2 days an I work full time!I had heard about the book and then the movie came out... I did not want to see the movie until after I had read the book. I am sooo glad I waited to see the movie! Only complaint, TOO short, I could have read on and on!
My son had started reading this book. I decided I wanted to read it, because I didn't think he was reading it. It got misplaced when I did some cleaning. I could not find a copy at the local Wal-Mart,so I decided to try ebay. I found a copy at an affordable price and ordered it. It took about a week for it to arrive. It was in great condition and I was very satisfied with my purchase.
While The Da Vinci Code is a work of fiction. And yes the book does contain errors of such that religious scholars are raking it over the coals. I have no problem seeing this as fiction, maybe others do, even so, I have an open mind. I have watched the Ten Commandments probably a dozen times or more. The only thing I haven’t been able to figure out is how that Albino monk is badly beaten in the Marseilles harbor and later finds shelter in Andorra. Andorra is a small country perched on top of the Pyrenean Mountain range, hundreds of miles from any harbor, he said later that the beating happened in Marseilles. It’s as if I had runaway from Key West, Fla. and arrived in Mexico City a few hours later without a boat. Fact is Dan Brown has done extensive searching. There are plenty of people that agree with the vision of history and events described in The Da Vinci Code. In defense of Brown's research, he is a writer first of all, not a historian or theologian. he is not a heretic who thought up the concepts he describes. His explanations and depictions of history and the ancient societies that are featured in the book I believe to be as accurate as possible. I have enjoyed the DVD and the book. I am looking forward to receiving the Da Vinci and the Code He Lived By. I’m sure an interesting documentary from the History Channel. Loretta Marie
i really liked this book because it goes into detail about all the religious aspects people might not have heard about even though youll never know the exact truth about everything in the bible its a great agrument or discussion startup, i decided to buy this book because i heard great things about it from friends and seen the ratings were very high, way better then the movie!
I wanted to read the book after seeing the movie. It can be hard to fully get into a book after seeing the movie because it can restrict the imagination. This book is so well written that I had no problem getting into it. The story is intriging and kept my interest. I liked it so much that I am searching for a copy of the prequel
I have enjoyed his entire series. I think the point of his writing is to engage the reader to think outside the box. The more one considers the source of their faith, the stronger it should become. If the theory they base the faith on is not worthy of continuance, that is a sign that perhaps that path was not right for them to begin with. People judge harshly that which makes them question their own mind and spirit. I found the book challenging, and ultimately very entertaining. As for my faith, well my God is unending and undefinable by modern conventional theological thought, so it is a constant... The thought of the Goddess only confirms my own interpretations of the universe and the glorious creation it is:)
im probable one of the last to read this book...it was so popular...and for a good reason...its a great read...fast and furious...dont want to put it down...love it
I liked how it was a page turner but I didn't like how the author made it sound like everything he was writing was fact. I bought it because I was taking a class about it in Church. So I would know how to talk to others about it.
The book is great. Mainly because it opens the mind of the reader and expands it. I was not as much interested on the plot as much as the historical facts associated with the story. A lot to pounder about..but can not stop believing.
Bought DVD as soon as it came out, but wanted to read the book before I watch the movie. Found it at a great price. Being soft cover didn't bother me at all.
A right ripping good yarn. The mystery begins with murder in the Louvre. Professor Langdon, having been called to meeet the curator Louvre, Jacques Sauniere is now suspected of his murder by police inspector Bezu Fasche. But this is no ordinary murder. Jacques Sauniere in his dying moments left a trail of clues the hopefully Sophie Nevue and Professor Langdon would solve. Enter said cryptologist, Sophie Nevue, with her own agenda. Worried for his safety and sure he was not the perpetrator of the crime Nevue whisks Langdon away, bemused and struggling to make sense of the intrigue in which he finds himself. The pace picks up rapidly throughout the book as, peice by peice. Nevue and Langdon discover the stories that have brought them both together and the puzzle they have to try and explain. The burning questions about Jacque Suniere's past and the clues lead from Sauniere to Da Vinci to the Priory of Sion and to the to the possible truth about the Holy grail are answered.
I read the book when it first came out and have waited for it to come out in paperback so I could put a copy in my persoanl library. Once the book came out in paperback, I noticed that retailers were marking the price up considerably. I searched ebay and found it for a very good price. I have since read it again and the story is compelling and attention getting. If someone is interested in a good mystery and/or dramatic story, this is the book for them. The story is about murder, hidden messages, and conspiracy. For the avid reader, this book will hold you spellbound until the exciting ending. However, I do not recommend it for anyone that is faint of heart or extremely emotional as the story does include some greusome moments and very tramatic scenes.
I couldn't read this book fast enough!! You know what I mean? Like I was tripping over myself reading faster then I could go, and having to go back to read it properly. WHEW!
So who WAS this albino? What was this pain thing about? Why were there all these clues hidden in the art? Oh boy, it was a fun read.
I am a Mason, so I have to add that there's a lot of stuff here that's fiction about various groups. Like the Priory of Scion was developed in the mid 20the century, and posthumously added members such as Galileo, etc. So don't take all that seriously. Even with all that, there's lots to think about here as well! Did Jesus marry Mary? Did they have a child? hmmmmmm.
Do yourself a favor: read it, enjoy it, think about it!
At best Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code is just a mediocre modern day mystery with religious conspiracy overtones. The characterization seems like it came straight out of a 70’s made for TV movies. If you have read any mysteries before the plot is paper thin, the first time the true villain makes an appearance, it is basically a “well isn’t that contrite” moment. But it is a fast EASY reading novel. This book is just fine for lounging on the beach or passing the time on a cross country airline flight.
Some people take the conspiracy overtones to being anti-catholic. I think this is just nonsense but if you are sensitive to this sort of thing you might be offended by this book.
A much more interesting book, in a similar venue (modern day mystery with religious conspiracy overtones), is Foucault’s Pendulum by Umberto Eco. Be forewarned, Eco’s novel is a MUCH more challenging read but in the end is a more enjoyable novel. It is analogous to comparing cotton candy (Da Vinci Code) to a 12 course gourmet dinner (Foucault’s Pendulum). Both will satisfy hunger, both are a type of food, but the popular one is something which can be consumed casually and in the end leaves you wondering if you should have made an effort to consume something that would have been more fulfilling.
book is new. fast shipping................................................................................................................................
The Da Vinci Code is a novel posing as something else, lending deceit to the story as it pretends to be some sort of mysterious truth. Though it is relatively average storytelling, its ending is anticlimactic and a letdown. My time could have been better spent.
This was an excellent FICTION book. Dan Brown clearly states on the inside copyright page of the book that it is fiction. I don't know why everyone is getting so worked up about this "thriller." It is no different than reading a book by Tom Clancy--it's just fiction, folks. And, for the record, I am a Christian. I read the book, I enjoyed the book. Do I believe it? No. But, then, I don't believe any of the great fiction books I read, I just enjoy them for what they are. I'm sure Dan Brown thinks the world has gone nuts, but is most grateful for all the publicity.
This book was fantastic and suspenseful. I sometimes have trouble getting into books and had no problem diving in here. I would recommend reading Angels and Demons prior to reading this book. Only because there are some comments in this book referring to the prior. Both books are fantastic. If you like mystery and suspense accompanied with a side of history, this book is for you.
I see a lot of Movies, and read Few Books. Even fewer still would I Read the Book AND See the Movie! This is one of those rare exceptions. In this case I saw the movie First, and HAD to get the book, and I was not disappointed. Even tho there are significant plot differences, the book gave me the added detail and depth of characters that I needed. Having seen the movie first, I was able to Visualize the characters and distinguish who is who much better. There are few others that I recommend both Movie and Book. This was well worth the cost of both.
